Small fanny pack. Not kidding. Usually under jacket. I also have a under clothes money belt, underwear wtih money pockets (little underwear shorts and a bra with pockets. I've done some adventure traveling recently and so I had more cash in two currencies than ordinarily. The answer is NOT a backpack. Only put water, food, jackets in there.
Since it's winter, I intend to wear a slim crossbody bag under my coat, but I will have to have my phone out most of the time. That's why I'm wondering about the lanyard or wrist strap option.
Are you sure that's not an exaggeration? Why does your phone need to be out most of the time? When you pull up tickets at a museum or whatever, especially in Paris, you'll be within the doors of the lobby already. You can even just wait until you are directly in front of the employee if you want. I travel frequently and just use a small cross body and take my phone in and out as needed, or sometimes even just have the phone in my jacket pocket. I've never been pickpocketed or had my phone stolen.
