Karla Sofía Gascón (Oscars nominee) -- racist, Islamophobic tweets surface

Gascón is the first out trans actress or actor nominated in an acting category for an Academy Award (Elliot Page was nominated for Juno but before coming out as trans). Her comments in tweets that are only a few years old (not from like 20 years ago) are pretty disturbing:

"After Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis in 2020 by a White police officer, causing nationwide outrage and Black Lives Matter protests, Gascón took to Twitter, calling Floyd a “crooked junkie” in Spanish and using disrespectful phrasing to refer to Black people.

She also made at least a dozen Islamophobic tweets over the years, calling for a ban of the religion that she said went against European values and violated human rights. In another post, she said that Islam was “an infection for humanity that urgently needs to be cured.” She also used a racial slur to describe Muslims in Spain, her native country, and criticized how Muslim women dress."

I have not yet seen Emilia Pérez (and was unsure if I would because I was put off by the musical angle) but Karla Sofía Gascón has been a darling of the awards circuit this year. Will be interesting to see how Hollywood responds.

The way she went after literally ever race is disgusting!! The academy will need to say something to denounce her. I read this good article that said Hollywood only attached themselves to EP because of the current political world. They wanted another greenwood. Well looks like EP perfectly reflects our society
