DH is a GS 15 and has 17 years with the feds. He's spinning, like everyone else. He has a job offer outside the government. It's a lateral move, a bit less money, and at a 10 year old mid-sized consulting firm. He's interested in the job and the company.
However, it's not something he'd consider normally bc of typical federal government stability.I want him to wait out this madness for a bit and see if things calm down. Federal retirement benefits are not something to throw away. But he's been miserable for a while and all of this junk since Trump took office is just reinforcing his misery. What would you do in this situation? |
| Depends - what is the source of most of their funding and is the work directly/indirectly dependent on federal funds/clients? |
| I’d at least learn more about benefits, workplace culture etc. I’d consider it! |
|
How long is the job offer good for? If they're going to do RIFs I'd want to try to double dip and get paid to leave to a waiting job.
But in general my thinking is - if he was unhappy before the Trump morass, the fact that Trump wants him gone isn't enough of a reason to stay. I wouldn't leave to make Elon happy but I wouldn't stay where I'm unhappy to spite him either, ykwim? |

I would do it if he's miserable or if the other job offers
More telework. I would try to block out the noise of the current nonsense if it's just a lateral for less pay and no other hook. |
| I’m sure one of the other quitters will take the job if he doesn’t. |

| Less money, no. I’m not convinced any of this will stand, I’m holding steady as a 19 year in fed. I have an opportunity to move to of counsel in tax and while it’s more money (I would not move for less), I am, and always have been, committed to the mission of my agency. |

Not for less money.
This too shall pass. |
Similar here but more like same money — but pre ipo stock so it comes with lottery ticket .. |
| No way for less money. Trump is in office for only 10 days? He needs to be miserable for 500 days before considering a salary downgrade. |
| How old is he? |
| Hold the line. |
+1. Bingo. No way I’d move for less money bc some tech bro wants me to. I’m also 19 years in. The fed needs people like me and others to stay and maintain the mission of an impartial civil service. If they want to fire me, they can do it through proper channels. I’d only take another job at this point if it paid a lot more and offered guaranteed telework. |
| What is the leave situation? If they can’t match salary, can they offer more vacation and/or sick time? Ideally position offers at least 20 days of vacation. Also depends on how vulnerable his position is. Good luck! |
