Sports try outs- if you’re cut do they email you?

Anonymous
We went to our first try out for a sport on a select team and I’m wondering what they typically do if you do not make the team. This is for 8 years olds with spots for only about a quarter of the children who tried out. Will they send an email? Can you follow up and ask what needs to be worked on?

I think at this age I want to tell my kid you weren’t ready “yet” and not write off the team or sport if they do not make it.

yes, usually

A good program will email you. I’m surprised the organization isn’t planning for multiple teams at the age group if they’re cutting 75% of the kids trying out. Honestly, if they have that many at tryouts for only one team, there’s a pretty good chance half the team is decided before tryouts even happen.

Do not give up on team sports because your kid gets cut at age 8. Keep practicing and playing in whatever league is available.

That’s with an A or B team. This is that weird covid year with a million boys.

This is why I steer my kid away from team sports, and toward individual sports. My oldest and middle DS are into tennis and swimming, respectively. They make the team based on their own individual performance, and not arbitrarily by coaches. My youngest is into soccer, and he is always afraid of getting cut/replaced by another player because the coach has the final word on who can make the team.

I hear you. Really tough too with a kid bordering the cut off date by a few days.

It has nothing to do with the cut-off date. It has everything to do with favoritism and nepotism when the coach has the final say. There is no solid evidence that player A is better than player B, other than "the coach says so."

I just meant being on the bottom of the age group seems harder to make a team. I see what you mean. Well we don't have any favoritism or nepotism either. We are new to the area and it will be our first time meeting the coach when we arrive for the evaluation.
