How should I pack?

Anonymous
In early/mid Feb, I’m out west for nearly a week to ski, then headed directly to Palm Beach to see ILs for two days/nights. Will be going out one night with friends who are there for the winter. What should I pack for FL? Last year we were there during a cold snap, but hoping that FL has gotten this out of the system this season.

Just flummoxed on what to do when I have a week of cold weather first.

I don't really understand the question. Bring clothes appropriate for skiing - and also bring clothes appropriate for Florida.

It has been a cold winter in FL but it's warming up this week - it can go either way in Feb, so you'll want to be prepared for (relative) cold or hot.

What's the part you're having trouble with here? You will need two separate sets of clothes. That's how you pack. You can bring some stuff that works either way - layers; a pair of jeans; etc.

Yes, yes. I just feel that I’ve become an overpacker so am hoping for someone to spell out, “pack this for FL - x, y, z.”

I’ve found packing so much more challenging as I age.

Can you mail your Florida clothes ahead of time, so you don’t have to have them in your luggage for skiing?

A cold snap in south Florida isn’t actually cold. It’s like 70 at the lowest. The issue is the air conditioning. Pack lightweight and use a light sweater for restaurants.

When we were there last February, it was very, very cold, lower than 70. We had warm enough jackets as we were just there for a few days, but our friends barely left there place. Now they keep Uniqlo jackets in their closet in case the temps drop.

That’s a thought, but I think I’d just rather have everything with me in case plans change. My ILs are not so mobile at this time.

That is absolutely not true. It was in the 40s and 50s earlier this week - and went into the 30s at night. We're a bit north of where OP is doing, but I was wearing a puffer, long pants, and boots for much of the week - while shopping for wool sweaters.

It may or may not get that cold again this winter. OP will already have cold weather clothes with her because of skiing so I don't think she'll need extra clothes as far as that goes.

But what to pack if it's warmer? Whatever you ordinarily wear in 70 and 80 degree weather! For me (51 years old, a pretty casual but also fairly vain person) that's shorts, t-shirts, sundresses - and always a jean jacket or some other topper, because it is frigidly air conditioned inside a lot of places.

I don't know what that means for OP - or, honestly, what's good to wear over int he fancier part of the state. Linen pants, maybe?

White pants/white skirt bright colored shirt, and bring a white jean jacket or colorful sweater as a topper.

Will you need to go out / dress up while skiing? It always seems like athletic wear is acceptable everywhere near ski places. I would wear one pair of athletic wear pants - in addition to want I would wear skiing. Pack one pair of nicer long pants plus a pair of shorts or skirt for Florida and a top that matches both. Or a dress you like with a cardigan. Wear sneakers and pack one pair of sandals. Then pack some extra tops (for me, that is what I need to change - versus pants I can re-wear).

The hard part is figuring out if you need boots for walking around at the ski resort. Those take up a lot of room.

Wear your boots on the plane, carry a pair of light, slip on sneakers for Florida and a plastic bag for carrying your books upon landing in FL.

I don't understand.

Why can't you Google the weather forecast for your destination in FL (and your ski resort while you're at it) a few days prior to leaving?

Isn't this common knowledge?

I’ve got the skiing end covered. Just trying to figure out what to pack for a few days in FL.

Again, I tend to overpack so am trying to smarter this time.

Linen tank top, drapey pants, flat sandals or sneakers, thin cotton sweater, maybe a light cotton jacket, gauze or silk or linen dress/cover up. It'll likely be in the 60s/75
