Which one is better for the following factors: academics, college town, sports, overall sophistication.

you left out the most important part.

What's the best fit. All the other stuff doesn't matter if your kid isn't happy.

The kids seem pretty similar and happy at each.

Instate? cost? And if not accepted to both, question is unimportant.

I grew up in Georgia. I had every intention of going to university of Georgia, but for various reasons ended at VT. Vibes are quite different. UGA still has that old south feel hanging around. That’s not a negative but depending on where you kid grew up is a different culture. Academically Virginia tech is typically ranked higher and pull my job applicants into the DC area. What is your kid looking for and what is their major?

UGA is now ranked higher (46) than VT (51). VT had SW Va vibes not long ago, so they both have changed recently and become top choices.

Sports can fluctuate-and also depends on which sport(s) you follow. Both will have the big game atmosphere, but whether or not they have a winning season no one can predict.

One thing you could also consider is how difficult will transportation be for long breaks? I know there is a bus that goes from Northern VA/Washington DC to Blacksburg--including a stop at Dulles airport. If your kid plans to bring a car to campus, is there adequate parking?

Athens is one of the top colleges town in the US. In this category, UGA wins.

Oof. neither.

UGA is not super expensive for OOS to begin with. If your kid is offered merit, like mine, it might even be less expensive than VT. Transportation is much harder for UGA b/c Athens is not that close to ATL. But, you don't have to deal with 81.

Huh? Those are mainly fit questions.

Business is a tossup.}, college town {Blacksburg is a fine college town, but Athens is a great one.}, sports {VT has great sports and great spirit, but it's not SEC-level.}, overall sophistication {Not sure what you're asking here. Neither of these places is Harvard or Columbia.}.

Also depends- both are nationally-ranked schools but I would imagine that VA Tech feeds more into the DVM job market whereas UGA feeds more into the Atlanta job market.

My kid had this choice - humanities major. Chose VT due to the breadth of majors offered, especially in the area of interest, the location in the mountains, and the general feeling of "fit." Loves it!
