Birth year/school year changes

Curious how this shift to school year will affect my DS who is currently in U12 and has an October birthday. Will it benefit him or hurt him? How are teams preparing for this massive shift?

Sorry for the snark, but there is a 600+ page thread on this topic already. https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1207623.page
Really hoping to avoid another 600 page thread on the same topic.

Maybe this one can be more on the change for soccer as a whole, instead of what is considered "elite". To include the younger ages.

We should have an idea in the next few weeks what at least some of the governing bodies and leagues are going to do. USSF is allowing “reasonable flexibility” so the guess is there will be different cutoffs between different leagues with some going “seasonal year” (aka school year) and some sticking with “birth year.”

I wonder how long it will take for +60 bot to find this thread.

BTW, there is nothing elite about the other thread, quite the contrary.

I don’t know - if there ever was an elite thread, that might be it.

That's why the word was in quotes.

I think it benefits your player if they go by grade since he’ll be one of the oldest. My niece at u10 is a Sept bday and tiny so it will be good for her if it happens. But as a long time soccer parent (u17) I like the simplicity of birth year over grade since it’s a clean and consistent cutoff. Different school districts have different requirements and then there are the kids who have been redshirted so where is the line drawn? At my son’s age and level, it’s a moot point as most of his team will be seniors in the fall and the consensus on the team is the late born 2008s would just play up and continue with the team.

Where is the line drawn? At the date that the 12 month window is determined. This has no relevance to redshirting.

Cause OP is self-centered and only cares and thinks about himself so he doesn't want to read 600+ post.

Our club is convinced nothing will change. As US Soccer decided against a mandate, they are sensing most leagues will not change. The "Change is Coming" can just keeps getting kicked down the road.

But of your son's league/ club does change, he could get a boost until puberty affects all kids and the relative age boost is gone in the middle of high school, then it won't really matter much.

Your club is just a minion.
