We have a 3 year old Siberian cat. We feed her one 3 ounce can of wet cat food twice per day, and she wastes a LOT of it. Occasionally she eats the entire can but usually she eats less than half, leaves it sitting in the bowl and then refuses it once it’s been sitting there for a few hours.
We’ve tried giving her 1/2 the can but she won’t eat the leftovers (cold, warmed up, or even microwaved a tiny bit so it’s luke warm). Anyone have this experience and what do you do?? I wish they made wet cat food in 1.5 ounce cans but it doesn’t seem like they do. |
| She's eating too much. When she's really hungry, she'll eat the second half of that can, if you cover it up tightly so it doesn't oxidize too much. |
| Just give once per day. |
| They make smaller cans but you pay more. I get this problem too and mix leftovers with dry food and leave outside for the stray cats. Try adding a little water to the leftovers and stirring. Then present alone at room temp. If that doesn’t work mix with dry food. If that doesn’t work feed it to the strays or raccoons. Or just buy fancy feast that comes in tiny cans. Or temptations. |
So cover it left out in the bowl? It doesn’t go bad? I think what you’re saying is we are offering too much, not that she’s eating too much because she’s not eating. |
Only serve half in the bowl. Cover the can tightly for the next meal and refrigerate to slow oxidation. You're right, I meant to say you were offering too much. |
| You can buy lids for cat food cans. They just get a bit dry but add a little water and stir. Just a bit though like a TB at a time. |
| Buy Fancy Feast. Smaller servings. |
Yes but she will not eat it after it’s been refrigerated. That’s the issue |
Put a lid on it and leave it out. It will be fine for a day. |
Agree. You can buy lids for the 3oz cans on Amazon. For the 5.5 oz cans as well but those lids happen to be the exact same size as the Blue Diamond almond cans and we eat those. |
Absolutely not! |
My point is that she will eat when she's really hungry. |
| Cats aren’t “meal a day” creatures. They’re built for frequent small feedings. Just a plastic spoon or two. They want the food fresh and not dried up. The majority of cats won’t overeat. And they like the attention of being fed regularly. The idea that you can starve a cat into eating dried up nasty old food is nonsense. They’ll do without first. And it is cruel. |
This is OP and she has dry food too, but so what do you do? I’m happy to feed her multiple times a day but I’d be wasting many cans. |
