Gotham FC Youth Talent Showcase

Anonymous
I am seeing quite a few social media posts about the Gotham FC youth showcase happening right now in New Jersey. Were any local players selected to attend? Or is it just for players in the Gotham FC professional pathway?

I haven't seen anything local either - Gotham was out and about at the girls ECNL Florida showcase - at quite a few games from what i have seen posted.

It's got no press at all - but this Instagram (terrible I know) post mentions how it works.

This event is invite-only that features some of the top talent in the country and allows our players to compete in front of Gotham FC staff and scouts.

There’s local NOVA talent there. The club hasn’t posted about it yet though.

Understand talent ID showcases for what they are. Clubs select the players they want to send. These mostly serve as marketing events for clubs, and resume padding for players. This one from Gotham FC is really no different from all the other talent IDs out there ECNL/GA/I2/ODP. The clubs who are part of the Gotham FC Alliance (another marketing alliance) will get to send some players and use it as marketing for the club. The interesting aspect to Gotham's talent ID is that a pro team is bypassing the existing structures (USYNT/ECNL) and forming their own events.

They didn’t bypass. They scout ECNL events.

By bypass I mean running your own events instead of relying on someone else's. Running the event makes money.

Some VDA players were selected for this showcase. And I assume that a VDA coach is responsible for the original post - feigning ignorance to drum up attention.

For $360 the dream to be evaluated by a pro team are yours

actually, they had dozens of the top colleges there. kind of cool. other NWSL clubs have had id events before, but this one had coaches from UNC, UCLA, Duke, FSU, Notre Dame, UVA and literally dozens of top schools. plenty of YNT players there, too - but many of the top older YNT players are already "training players" with full NWSL teams so no need for them to go.

pretty cool opportunity to be seen by college scouts though

Amazing for players needing to be scouted for college.

You forgot Penn State, Wake Forest, Ohio State, Michigan State, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Pitt...

Mirroring colleges to fund their future trips form these ID events.

There was no charge to attend this event. Gotham provided meals, recovery, athletic trainers, etc.

You could also just go to an ECNL Showcase with your team....
