Received a message from DC's teacher that DC has been a bit less focused in class recently. Teacher gave all 4s on report card in fall but I'm expecting this could change for Q2. DC is borderline in terms of test scores (one test score at 132). I'm worried now that the HOPE and subsequent report cards will sink the application.
DC is not disruptive, but if others are talking to DC, then DC gets distracted. Had a great relationship with previous teacher and was always well behaved but says this teacher yells a lot and class is a bit chaotic. |
Also, anyone know when these packets are finally put together and shipped off to the central office for review? |
I believe that yes, 1st semester grades go in the packet.
However from what you describe I would be slightly more worried about the HOPE than the report card. Kids get low grades in AAP in behavior all the time from what I've heard from teachers. But the HOPE score is the single biggest predictor of whether a kid gets in or not, and if this teacher doesn't like your DC that will be an issue. At our school it's AART, 1st grade, and 2nd grade teacher together who work on the packet (not sure on HOPE), but every school is different. So 1st grade teacher's high opinion of your DC may or may not help. The best triage you can probably do is collaborate with the teacher to reinforce at home the need for focus. Also 132 is definitely not bottom of the range of kids admitted to AAP. |
February sometime. They are often very cagey about exact date. |
Where is it in the range then? |
Ours was final first grade report card (full year grades) and first quarter second grade report card. YMMV. |
Only first quarter report cards go in the packet. |
This is from 2020, but you can see the median test scores for admitted kids on page 66. https://go.boarddocs.com/vsba/fairfax/Board.nsf/files/BPLQKV69B096/$file/FCPS%20final%20report%2005.05.20.pdf |
Thank you. To clarify, she likes DC and said really good things at our last meeting, but it seems very recently she noticed DC was chitchatting a bit too much during class instruction. re: the test score, it's hard to know what's competitive when so many people post v. high scores here. DC wasn't in pool in our elementary, fwiw. VAALLS was 719 and I-ready consistently high in 99th. Did my best to assemble strong parent forms/work samples but no idea if it's what they were looking for... |
Ha, they are cagey about a lot of things! |
When is the HOPE completed? I'm hoping (no pun intended) the HOPE was already put together before teacher noticed the chitchatting... |
This document is informative about A LOT of things. Thanks for posting it. The regression models are interesting. Crazy to see race as a predictor after all other factors considered including the GBRS. NNAT seems pretty trivial a predictor after all other factors are considered. |
our HOPE from last session was dated the november |
DD got in last year for 4th grade AAP and they included the 2nd quarter grades. The school's screening report summary sheet says it was completed 2/28 and the HOPE on 1/24. Her HOPE scores weren't that great even though I only ever received positive feedback about her school performance- a lot of sometimes- and 132 Cogat. |
OP here. Great that she got in but how frustrating to get inconsistent feedback. Also this makes me think it's a crapshoot in terms of what will be included and when. Hopefully the teacher still likes DC enough to give decent enough scores. Her review of DC was glowing when I last met her so this has me concerned as it was pretty unexpected feedback. |
