Here’s a shoutout to the teachers with outdoor duty in the AM!

On these cold winter days, those of us who are outside making sure the students are safe getting into the school, that the carline is moving as best it can, and that any problems get resolved quickly…all while shivering in the cold, my hat goes off to you. We can bundle up as much as possible, but it’s still very cold. Next week when temperatures are predicted to be in the single digits—-may you have extra layers and a hot drink waiting for you.

🥶 ☕️

Yes, thank you for doing this work. I know it’s no fun, but safety is important and you all get the school day off to as smooth a start as possible.

If you really meant what you said, then I suggest you show up with a hot beverage for those teachers who stand in the freezing cold day after day,

While dropping off DD at Bethesda-Chevy Chase high school last week after the snowstorm, I saw the kid welcome group at Our Lady of Lourdes doing their usual song and clap-in for the students coming into the school. Girls in skirts and bare legs, some of them. Brrr. I hope they didn't force them to stand outside that day, and that they only took volunteers.

Op here…I *am* one of those teachers 🤣 I do try and have some tea ready for afterwards, but there’s not always time.

This is the first time I’ve had outdoor morning duty, so I feel for all the teachers/staff who have done this for multiple years.

I’ve had AM bus duty. It’s brutal. I then have to rush in and begin teaching about 10 minutes after. There’s no time for coffee or to warm up. There’s also no time to meet with my students who need extra help, which is what that AM time is supposed to be for.

Can you have a thermos to sip from at your desk?

I'm one of those teachers, too, and t's so unpleasant!

*it's*, sorry

I’m one of them as well and I’m considering leaving my school over it. We did not have that duty at my previous job. It’s miserable and I didn’t go to graduate school so I could stand out in the freezing rain.

That stinks. I work at an ES and no classroom teachers have duty. Only specialists, assistants, reading teachers, EL teachers, Sped Teachers (the push in pull out ones) etc. No one who has responsibility for a classroom all day.

We're at a private where teachers rotate through morning and afternoon carpool duty. I am SO grateful for them. They do an amazing job day after day and always greet my kids with a smile even when it's cold and rainy or windy and miserable.

Those are almost certainly not teachers, but aides. Those crappy duties and the incredibly low pay are the reason there is a perpetual shortage of them. Maybe admin should get their butts out of the office and work the car line once in a while.

Only classroom teachers are assigned duties at my school. Classroom teachers get parking lot duty, sub duty, and cafeteria duty. The office-based staff, admin, and aids are never added to these rotations. And because the need is so great, teachers end up doing at least one of these duties every day. Sometimes two.

It causes a ton of resentment.

All true, but I’ve never worked at a school where only assistants do these tasks. Special ed, ESL, specialists, and sometimes classroom teachers take these on morning and afternoon. It takes a lot of staff to make arrival and dismissal run safely.
