Colleague got promoted, now my manager and “quiet firing”

I’ve worked with this person for years as peers, our personalities rub 100%.

Out previous boss left the company in December and he was put in the role. Performance review for 2024 was 3 or 4 out of 5 in all categories. The average for all departments must be a 3. So I’m not an underperforming employee.

I have documented instances of quiet firing tactics, I.e. leaving me off meetings, not responding to emails, inserting himself in my portfolio, being told to not attend conferences. Alone these wouldn’t be a big deal, but several times in under a month is not okay.


What do I do? I’m stressed beyond belief!!!!!

Did you apply for the job? You acknowledge that you don't get along (I assume that's what you mean when you say your personalities run 100%). If he agrees with that assessment then he of course would want you gone. I think your options are to try harder to get along, while making yourself indisputable or start looking for a new job. Your post reads alike you'd rather angle to continue fighting with this guy by building a case against him, accusing him of wrongful termination or hostile work environment. Please don't waste your time.

Was he "put" in your previous boss's role as a temporary/interim measure while they interviewed for a permanent replacement? Or is this guy now the boss? If the later, either get on board and try to work better with him, or you start looking.

This exactly. If this is your new permanent boss, I'd think you'd want to leave whether they are planning to fire you or not.

You know this person is not going to change and their feelings about you are certainly set as well. Being consistently on edge and not getting along with your boss puts you on the road to hating your job by the end of 2025.

I would be looking for a new job.

The worst mistakes I have made at work are trying to outlast an asshat. Start looking, you'll be so much happier to be free of this person.

You’re wasting your time trying to document. You hate each other and this person is now your boss so it’s time to move your energy into finding a new position.

Why are you stressed. Just play along unless it gets hostile or your rating goes down . Did this new boss do your performance review?
