Why are activities before noon in schools cancelled today, Saturday?

Anonymous
It's less than an inch probably. Are they concerned about the ice underneath? Why cancel activities starting before noon?
Anonymous
Why do you think? This is not rocket science.

We have two inches here in Rockville. I am actually pissed they didn’t cancel all day because it’s not warm enough to melt and the schools need more than a few hours to clear all parking lots and walkways/sidewalks or Monday will be ice skating

It will melt today and tomorrow

It’s before 11 not noon fyi.

I’m guessing to give them time to plow and salt the parking lots.

Just to annoy the inept.

My not-mcps kid is helping to run a not-mcps sponsored activity today that some school-based groups participate in. The activity is not cancelled but mcps (and Howard county) based groups were required to drop out. So silly -- the kids are the losers.

Same thing happened for a major activity that all MD schools were participating in. (State Dance Showcase) Those who were on a delay or school cancelled were out for the activity. It’s unfortunate but the school systems need to make the decisions they believe are safest for the kids. These activities are great but not life changing.

11am, not noon.

The snow stuck to the roads because it is so cold. Why the stupid question.

The sidewalks and parking lots have ice.

What’s so important that made you upset. Chill!

Seriously. People don't use their brains anymore.

If you cared enough to actually read OP's post, they said it's less than an inch. Others said they got more like 2in. totals were low so district could have cleaned it off in time not to have to delay activities or cancel them. Seems it stopped snowing before 5am in most parts of the area. But message announcement was made yesterday so maybe school district was unsure how conditions would be this AM. Btw, at a couple of schools, snow cleanup was inadequate Fri - icy patches leading into school's vehicle entrances. Not sure if county was responsible or that portion was school's responsibility.

Monday 1/14 will be fine.

For worryworts:
Wednesday might be super cold at 14 degrees and a wind chill factor.

Next Monday 1/21 looks like a winters mix at the moment but that’s already a day off. Timing/weather could shift though.

Let it be a wintry mix when that takes office, no one should come to his inaguaration, flags shouldn't even be flying half staff when it's wet/rain/wintry mix or when the country is mourning that taking office.
