I think you and your child should just visit both. they are pretty different (within the world of LACs in north east). My DC loves middlebury.

Both very hard admits but a lot of schools are quite similar so makes sense to broaden the list.

College Counselor here. I think these two are actually two of the most similar NESCACs.

Very similar. Midd is bigger and in a much better location.

Middlebury wins for location, but there's not much difference otherwise.

Okay, but the location win is a LANDSLIDE.

They’re about the same. Some say if you squint, they look the same.

Middlebury’s a bit bigger, Hamilton has open curriculum and mild Greek scene. Middlebury for languages, Hamilton for writing. Both have a lot of private school kids.

Midd has a fantastic English/creative writing program.

Anyone I have known who has chosen Hamilton over Middlebury has done so because they received a better financial aid package. (This is not said disparagingly.) It seems like Hamilton is more generous with financial aid.

YMMV

These were my DD’s top 2 choices for ED. She ultimately chose to ED (successfully) to Hamilton. Ultimately, the factor on paper that tipped the balance was Hamilton’s open curriculum. But there was also some feeling she had that she could see herself there in a way that translated into her thinking Hamilton would want her more than Middlebury would.
