| I’ll be moving to the area soon and I want to make sure we buy a house in an area zoned for a smart and quirky Black boy. He likes learning about history, playing chess, and tennis. |
| Tough question. Your son sounds like mine. Consider private schools. |
TPMS and then Northwood worked for DD’s best friend. DS was okay at Blair. |
Nope |
| why does race matter |

I think it's impossible for a group of anonymous strangers to tell you what school would be a good fit for your son.
First of all, he might be shy and introverted for forever. Second of all, the kid of child you describe your son as exists in almost every MCPS middle and high school. So the truth is, he COULD be ok in any number of schools but we're not equipped to tell you if the school would be a good fit for your son since we don't know him or what you value in a school environment. Also, do you have the resources to consider private? |
| Basic advice is the more wealthy the area the more likely to get schools with more academic options but also less diversity. If you find a ‘ mid range’ school - you likely will be well served. Take a look for schools that score a 4 on the recent Maryland school report card and then check diversity. |
Because some people “don’t see race” and therefore, they are blind to policies and practices that single out Black and Brown boys for punishment while white and Asian boys engage in the same or worse behavior. And even though they allegedly “don’t see race”, they somehow consistently fail to offer highly capable and interested Black boys opportunities to take engaging courses or participate in “nerdy” extracurriculars. As an MCPS teacher, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to intervene on behalf of a Black boy whom my “race blind” colleagues are either unfairly harassing or unfairly failing to encourage. |
Well I have to start somewhere. I am not from this area. Kind going through this without much assistance. |

| Avoid Wootton until they start taking racism seriously. |
Are private schools an option? If so, maybe consider Burke or Sandy Spring Friends School. |
