Video footage and other data collected by Tesla helped law enforcement quickly piece together how a Cybertruck came to explode outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day.
The trove of digital evidence also served as a high-profile demonstration of how much data modern cars collect about their drivers and those around them.
Data privacy experts say the investigation — which has determined that the driver, active-duty U.S. Army soldier Matthew Livelsberger, died by suicide before the blast — highlights how car companies vacuum up reams of data that can clear up mysteries but also be stolen or given to third parties without drivers’ knowledge. There are few regulations controlling how and when law enforcement authorities can access data in cars, and drivers are often unaware of the vast digital trail they leave behind.

I guess Tesla willingly shares all data collected with third parties and police(without warrants). Wonder how that works in a traffic accident and with Insurance companies. Many insurance companies are incentivizing drivers to allow monitoring of your driving habits and charging accordingly.

Tesla records your speed, driving efficiency/impairment, locations visited, etc and shares that information with who knows who.

My understanding most car companies already do this to some degree.
Some cases when you opt out it voids the warranty

I imagine most of them do this, and I certainly think it was the right decision to turn information over quickly in this case, where there was an ongoing terror threat and waiting for a warrant would have slowed an active investigation.

It's funny how Americans have given up their privacy so quickly. Then they usually say, "I have nothing to hide!" Well, that's fine. But you've never lived under a regime that uses everything little detail against you...

Agree, but it's boring that the OP wants to make this a Musk thing, and therefore yet another political topic in a random forum. I wouldn't object to a post in Political Discussion asking for bipartistan legislation for more privacy rights.

Americans are happy to give up privacy for convenience or amusement. Look at how many people will give up their birthdate, home address, etc just for a $10 coupon off at sl store. Or will give Apple their picture and fingerprint just so they don’t have to type in a four letter code to open their phone.

People vandalize and incorrectly use charging stations. Big gas-powered trucks like to park at them too, to make a statement. They are expensive pieces of utility equipment. Why is it a surprise they have security cameras?
