Too tired to read at night

Anonymous
I want to get into a really good book and want to read more.. but with two kids and a full time job, I often find I only have time at night. By that point, Im exhausted and can only watch tv..which seems like a waste of time. I find that when I read during the day, I can focus better. Just venting I guess.. anyone else experience this?

I was never an audiobook person but with two kids and a job, this is what works best for me now. I listen while cleaning up the kitchen, cooking, doing laundry etc. Makes these tasks more enjoyable.

If you want to read, turn off the TV and put down the phone. You will read.

"Can only watch TV" isn't real. It's psychological.

To some extent I agree with this. But there are definitely times when if I try reading I fall asleep after 2 pages.

This is why I listen to audiobooks as I fall asleep. I completely rest my eyes. I set the player to stop after 30-45 minutes or at the end of a chapter, and it's easy to go back if I find I've missed something when I resume the next day. Alternatively, if I'm awake enough to do some gentle exercise in the evening, I listen while I do that.

I go to bed about an hour before I want to go to sleep and read for about 30-45 minutes. It’s way more relaxing than just watching tv until bedtime.

This is the truth, full stop.

No judgment here, I've been fighting the battle myself since entering the full time work force following completion of my JD and it became a much harder battle since obtaining my first smartphone. My brain is habituated to digital content, but it is perfectly capable of reading when I shut those things off and pick up an actual book. It's the shutting things off that is the problem.

This is similar to what I do. I aim for turning off the light at 10 so I start the bedtime routine at 9. Sometimes I do fall asleep over the book and keep trying to read the same page over and over until I give up.

For the PP with the TV watching, don't turn it on. Try thinking of it as not even an option, no TV after X time.

No TV in bedroom. Or ipad, etc.

Agree, don't turn it on.

The TV is just keeping you artificially awake. If you fall asleep to the book, you need more sleep! Get back on a good sleeping schedule. Then try earlier bedtime to read.
