Communication from MLSN/GA/ENCL Coaches

Anonymous
What level of direct coach to parent communication should a high level ie MLSN/GA/ENCL/NL family expect? Should all family to coach and vice versa be run through the kid? Does it matter if kid is recruiting or pre college recruiting years?

Do players at higher levels ever get formal IDPs?

At our club with the USYS NL level, they have formal IDPs updated twice a season (Start/Finish) with a formal finish meeting that becomes more player-led the older the player gets. At younger levels, the discussions are more about learning the game tactics, player role, and communication with teammates and includes more longer-term goals the older the player gets with possible college.

ECNL - all ages get comprehensive IDP (player has to do self-reflection and then we get the coach's IDP) twice per season, which includes formal meeting and player ranking on team (top, 1/3, middle 1/3, or bottom third). We get direct communication re logistics from coach/club admin.

My DD has been on ECRL locally for over a year and has never had an assessment. U15.

MLSN- IDPs twice a year, parents can be involved with the meetings but really for the player.

In the last couple of years, we have turned over the communication about technical soccer matters to our DD who is U16. If she has questions about soccer related stuff, she needs to drive the conversation with her coach, not us.

I think it demonstrates a level of maturity and ownership on her part. We will certainly be sounding boards before that conversation to help her through the best away to approach, but it's not us sending the email, text, etc.

For other logistics stuff, we'll ask the team manager about things - for example, this weekends scrimmage had a time posted, but no location.

As far as IDPs go, she does receive and that's reviewed with her and the coach with a parent present. She has her self-evaluation and then the coaches feedback.

SYC - MLS Next - never. We are 'lucky' if the coach even shows up to games.

This comment highlights the competitive dynamics between ECNL parents and other leagues/clubs.

ECRL team- twice a year player assessments that are excellent and clearly have time invested in them. Video highlights to go along with them.

Coaches always send weekly emails- could be video to watch, assignment to do, logistics about tournament, etc...

communication is very clear and coaches are very approachable. this has been for u15 and 16.

Not sure ECNL is considered high level anymore. MLSNext, yes.

This sounds so bad. My DS is with SYC MLSN and his coach shows up for all games and practices. Like the other poster, I have my DS communicate and ask for feedback. DS gets feedback at practices and games and will ask via text.
