I thought I could go in person to renew my unexpired passport.
However, the woman who answered the phone said I had to mail in the paperwork for a renewal. Then, a friend said she renewed in person. Can anyone tell me if they renewed in person and, if so, where? The website doesn’t seem to be updated. |
You can renew in person at a designated center or by mail.
You can search for a facility and make an appointment here: https://iafdb.travel.state.gov/ |
You can renew adult passports online now.
https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/renew-online.html And no, you can not renew an adult passport in person unless it has been stolen/lost/expired more than 5 years. They want to reduce the flow of people at passport acceptance offices, so "basic" adult renewals can only be done by mail or online. |
The one exception to this is if you need to renew your passport under emergency circumstances and you schedule a last minute/emergency appointment at the special State Department offices. But under regular circumstances, you can only renew and adult passport online or by mail. |
If by "in person" you mean at a library or post office, you can do that too. |
Not for a renewal of a valid (or expired less than 5 years) adult passport. Those can only be renewed by mail or online. You could do it in person if your passport was lost or stolen. But then you would have to submit the other citizen confirmation documents (Except in the emergency circumstances described in a post above) |
I did mine “online” a couple of weeks ago. “Online” meaning you fill in the PDF online and print it out and mail it in, which hardly seems like an “online application” to me.
My son did his at the same time. He is 18, so tried to do the same process. It was sent back to do in person because his last passport was when he was a child. So he went to an office. Seems like they could be a little more clear about the process! |
They will take yours if you are going in for a child’s passport at the same time. Children’s passports are every five years, in person, and are treated as a new application (although you can use the old passport as an identity document). |
You can now do an adult renewal fully online without printing or mailing anything as of September 2024. https://apnews.com/article/passport-renewals-online-mail-paper-applications-87df311259fdbd01bc9fb50cab4137e9 https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/renew-online.html |
The online renewal was incredibly quick and didn’t require mailing anything in (not even the expiring passports). Highly recommend. |
Can you describe how the picture situation is handled when you do it online? I'm not that tech-savvy and that's the part that is holding me back. I imagine you just have to take a picture that fits within the requirements, upload a file, and it will tell you if the picture is approved or not? Am I imagining correctly? |
yes that's what I did |
Yes, they have a good explainer and video here. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/how-apply/online-renewal-photo.html |
I renewed mine in person at the MLK library. It's really just mail-in but they will take your photo, attach it, check all your docs and mail it for you.
I did it there because I needed to go anyway for to get passports for my kids. It was easy. They accept walk ins. |
Thank you, really. I have silly anxiety over things that seem complicated to me and you providing this link just helped me with something that's been causing me irrational stress for months. |
