Varsity Tutors calling with offer from FCPS

Anonymous
My HSer has an IEP but is a very good student (all As)- I got a call today about FCPS offering 2 sessions a week through March (I think that is what they said?) to my child. I need to sign up by Jan 1st to get the offer.

My HSer is not interested but I was wondering why this was being offered? Anyone know? My jaded side is telling me that FCPS is in trouble because they never do anything for the good of the students with IEPs.

Wait. Did Varsity call you? This sounds like a scammy sales pitch.

FCPS has contracted with them but it seems that families are not signing up in numbers.

My DS has a 504, does not have all As and is not interested. We have gotten a call and emails from them too. I would like to convince him to try it since I've seen some positive reviews of their tutoring.

A phone call? Oh no!!!

Are you Gen Z? That you can't handle a phone call?

Were they free? FCPS probably paid for a minimum block of lessons and is offering them to students with IEPs and 504s.

Nope and thanks for your unnecessary snark.

My question is if the tutoring company reached out directly to the parent - via text/email or call. I have direct experience with a tutoring company and there’s always an upsell and sales tactics similar to those in used car biz. You are a jerk

My understanding was that the Varsity Tutors tutoring was just random anonymous homework help and not scheduled sessions.

Wouldn't it be a privacy violation for a school district to give family contact info out without the family's permission? Could the group have been making cold calls on their own?

Not if they’re contracted to work with the district/families.

You are uninformed. FCPS contracted with them including prioritizing students with IEPs. A constant complaint is that families are not aware of the services that FCPS offers. When the services are offered, you are impugning them. Don't do that.

One of my kids has a 504 but zero academic struggles. They called us and explained they were calling all parents of students with IEPs or 504s to offer services. The representative said they offer tutoring for foreign language and some other elective subjects in addition to core academic classes. We don't need the services but it's good to know.

No one wants their crappy online tutoring services. FCPS fail.

Is it regularly scheduled tutoring?

We tried to use Varsity Tutors with the Virginia covid grant money. My child was in Geometry. We had one tutor session with a qualified tutor. That guy quit. THen They kept assigning tutors with no experience tutoring Geometry and I kept declining. The funds expired before any actual tutoring happened.

Varsity also sends emails almost weekly.

I never consented to give this company my information, so I am more than a little annoyed by the spam.

FCPS giving out this private information violates HIPPA.

ADHD is a medical diagnosis.
