Thinking of going to Greece in late April for around 8 days with my family of four (two teens). Budget maybe $6-8k excluding airfare. Is April a good month in terms of weather and tourist numbers? Which island would be good to visit? I have seen how packed Santorini gets during the summer but would it be that bad in April? We could potentially skip Athens and do a couple islands if there are others that are less crowded. Would want somewhere a little low key, with a nice beach. Thanks for any ideas! |
Average temps upper 60’s in April. |
Following as we are going to Athens and surroundings. You wont be swimming in the ocean and I think only islands may be repetitive as islands life is mainly geared around beach. Athens is wonderful and now very trendy. Maybe book some tours- food tours? History tours? |
Did you check out the cost of plane tickets? I found like $1500 to over $2k pp. I’ll be impressed if you can do this on your budget. |
Sorry. Poor reading comprehension this morning. You said excluding flights. |
Do Athena for 3 nights and then Crete. The islands won’t be great that time of year. |
A reminder that it’s probably too cold to swim. If you’re ok with that, then carry on. |
OP here. Thanks to everyone who replied. I didn't realize it would still be pretty chilly in April.
Any suggestions for warmer islands in Europe where we could enjoy the beach? We are currently living in northern Europe so hoping for sun and swimming weather! |
I planned Greece in April. Flights got cancelled so we rescheduled for summer.
Santorini looked good for spring. We booked Santorini Mansion and were planning to hang out in the hot tub and enjoy the views. Then, we could not afford that place for summer! We also went to Naxos. It would have been nice in spring, there are cute towns and history to explore. Paros should work too. Athens is fabulous and spring would be perfect for a few days of sightseeing. |
Doesn't exist in April- that's why most places don't open until mid-late May usually, and even then usually still cold to swim. |
Maybe the Canary Islands? |
Azores? |
Crete was amazing in April but mostly too cold for swimming. Gorgeous scenery though and lots of other stuff to do like hiking, ruins etc. we did a week of Crete plus Athens. |
Some of Madeira is warm in April. |
Nope none of Azores/Canary/etc have water temps above mid-60s in April. |
