University of Minnesota and Pitt

DS was accepted into both for Chemistry/Biochemistry. They seem pretty well matched. Anyone have experience at either school? He's still waiting for some early action results in January, but the schools are mainly reaches, so thinking these might be the two best options.

Where are you going from?
DC area? Direct flights to MN are not abundant (or cheap)
If these are evenly matched look at the other aspects of the experience.

My kid got into Minnesota OOS and got two merit scholarships, one being a waiver for in state tuition so it brings costs down significantly

It’s in our top 10 right now but we too are waiting for more results

DS also accepted to UMN and we are keeping it in the list because non-stop flights ARE abundant AND cheap. Not sure what ^ is referencing. Plus the school is eay to reach from airport.

Kid goes to UMN. There are 7 direct flights out of DCA daily, 5 on Delta and 2 on American. It’s been a positive experience overall.

Minnesota is the new Pitt. DC got into both in 2022 but only got merit from UMN.

UMN is very strong in Chemistry. If I recall it had the #1 grad chem engineering program a few years back

Top 10?! How many schools did you apply?

Kid maxed out his Common App and got a few direct admit offers

My DS is at Pitt in the honors program with a double major, one is molecular biology and also a minor in chemistry. He has had a great experience. He received some money, but we didn't find out until the spring. We are in the DMV so easy drive (although boring!) to Pitt and back

Our kid is likely going to Pitt. Couldn't get him to apply to Minnesota. Not sure why. We were there in September and he wouldn't even tour it.

OP here- the schools seem close enough in ranking that it's going to be about "fit." I've been to the UMN campus which is quite nice but have never been to Pitt. I hear the students at Pitt are generally happy.
We're still waiting on some schools that are reaches and very popular-- the way I'm hearing it, his chances aren't high. DS is a great student with a lot of hard classes and rigor, but inconsistent test taker-- the SAT score came in lower than expected, so I think that will be a factor.
All that said, I'm pleased with his choices so far.

sorry as a Minnesotan living in DC I have to refute that flights to MN are not abundant. It is super easy to get to Minneapolis and would think the door to door is five hours from home in D.C. to U of M campus and there are TONS of flights, including cheap sun country flights every day.

When did people hear from Minnesota? My son applied EA, but I don't think he has heard back. I am trying to not stress him out by telling him to check his portals every day, but maybe I should tell him to today?

He also applied to and was accepted to Pitt. He applied for chemical engineering, I think - I can't remember which schools allow you to apply to the specific type and which you have to just choose general engineering.

Pitt is school voted most like HogWarts Academy if that is your thing.

Yes that is an actual fact from the Tour I went on.
