Average amount of homework in middle school?

Anonymous
What the average amount of homework per night in middle school? I have heard 0-60min/night, is this correct?

Thanks!

Very little, which is sad especially for math.

The advise is 10 mins per grade level not including K. So anything up to approximately 60mins would be acceptable

Mine has zero. Math is their best subject, so they do it in class with little effort. Other subjects are more challenging, but the teachers don't assign homework. I am concerned because I know our high school kids get a lot of homework, and my kid is totally unprepared for managing any after-school workload.

I haven’t seen my 7th grader do homework ever.

No homework for my 7th grader (or last year in 6, either) unless something was not quite finished at school, in which case a couple of minutes at most. Zero regrets here. DC is learning well enough and we are leaning hard into extracurriculars and sports, and enjoying our family life without being haunted by homework. I feel very lucky.

They're not because they won't have 7 different subjects for 8 hours a day every day.

Have you discussed this with your child's teachers, the school counselor, and/or the school PTA? Some of this is very student Assign you kid a novel (any novel) and a deadline for it to be completed and an expectation for how many chapters to read per week.

30 minutes or less. Of course we add more.

0 at our MS. My kid finishes their work in class. Straight As. At orientation, they specifically said there's no homework.

My 6th grader gets very little homework. Which is fine I guess, but I hope it increases gradually as they progress to 7th and 8th grade.

Sixth grade with no homework.

North Bethesda MS - zero homework per night?

My 7th grader studies about 45 per night. Has to study at least 20 mins/night in French alone to understand vocab and grammar to do well on the weekly assessments, and has English and math assignments due every Friday. He has occasional assignments in other subjects, though some of that is completed in school. He also has regular assessment in math, French, and English, and occasional assessments in other classes, and studies for all of them. He is very diligent in studying and could definitely get away with studying less.
