Sledding destinations?

Downhill skiing is fun, but my family has found we actually prefer sledding. Anyone have recommendations for good places to sled that also have nice natural scenery and little cabins to rent that would likely have snow in January and February?

Ideally there would be nice long hills but it can be BYO sled, not necessarily an official sledding or tubing place.

We also are interested in trying out cross country skiing in case that's nearby. Basically we want to avoid the crowds and chair lift experience and heavy expenses that can come with downhill skiing but still have fun in the snow, ideally drivable from DC area.

Lake Placid is a charming town and has various activities such as indoor and outdoor ice skating. I also saw people cross country skiing, and there is tubing at nearby mountains.

Davis/thomas WV! We've done airbnb cabins in both, but the state park has more rustic cabins too.

+1 The sled run at Blackwater Falls is so fun. You should buy tickets in advance because they only sell a certain amount per reservation time. The limited sledders per time slot keeps it from being crowded and you are sledding the whole time.

White Grass is also nearby for cross country skiing. You can rent skis there and begin on the snow farm.

This is nice.
I'll look into Lake Placid, too
.
I'm also thinking about trying to find a place where you can get a cabin and have hills for sledding on without crowds. Don't need to have a lift. Maybe also be cheaper if there's not a huge ski resort in the area. Snow with some elevation changes and nature but without all the expensiveness and ski perks?
