Looking for my college student daughter who needs a reliable now nonsense car. The owner was an elderly man who recently passed away. Car had a full tune-up and look over/fix of the car with receipts. I know the car is old but low milage.
Any recommendations for a Subaru mechanic in NW DC welcome! |
| Are you asking if it is a good deal? Maybe, if the car is in perfect condition. Otherwise, I would offer 9-10k for it |
| Op here. Yes on price but also reliability. I like the low mileage but it’s a bit older than I want. We really like the model. |
| Make sure the tires aren’t original. |
Thanks if they are how much we try to negotiate down? |
At least the cost of a new set — $1,000 Tires should be replaced every five years. Dry rot in a 10-year old car would be a concern |

I had a 2013 Crosstrek. By 90,000 miles I’d had to replace 3 wheel bearings and both CV axles in front. And by 110,000 the transmission was starting to make ominous noises. And it was both using oil and leaking it at both cylinder heads. The only problem I didn’t have with it was anything electrical. Electrically it was absolutely fine.
If I had to pick a car to crash in, it would be my first choice. It’s heavy AF for its size and it’s built like a tank. It also worked amazing in snow up to about 7-8 inches deep. But Subaru has some serious issues these days with transmissions and oil use and oil leaks. I won’t own another one, in spite of its attributes. |
| is it the 2014 hybrid one? My hybrid battery died at 90K miles and it was expensive. |
| If you decide not to buy it, would you mind giving info on seller? I may be interested. |

Subaru doesn't update its powertrains very often.
Around 100K miles, it may need/should have gotten a new timing belt and water pump. My 2005 Saabaru (reskinned Impreza) was well-maintained but I also had the engine oil leaking and a coolant sensor issue by 100K miles. I sold it to a friend who fixes cars for $1K because he wanted a fun car that could be in salt during Midwest winters. The engine seized within a year. He sold it for $500 to a friend that was excited to wrench on it. That person rebuilt the engine and got it running again. The cars drive pretty well. But nonetheless they have some tendencies and issues. Do check up on all the recalls and typical problems. |
| 2014 Subaru had some transmission issues. Not sure if the Crosstrek was involved, but check because that is an expensive fix. |
oil leak issues have been fix in the newer models. I had a 2004 forestor, and had the gasket issue. Early crosstrek models had more issues than the newer ones. OP here, the seller ghosted me. We bought my college student a 2016 Prius. Thank you! |

LOL, thank you for following up.
My MIL passed away. Her vehicle had - count them - 18,000 miles at 12 years. Crazy. Not my type of vehicle at all but I know these older, well maintained vehicles with low mileage do exist! |
