Another Virgin Islands Question

We are heading to St John for just a few days next week. It will be our first visit. The weather looks so so (some wind, possible rain).

The plan had been to snorkel at least one day, and hike another. Would you take a day trip to White Bay (BVI) if your entire vacation was about five days? Thanks from a newbie.

When we went to St John, BVI wasn’t taking US visitors due to Covid - but it seemed like it would have been the thing to do if we could have.

I’d go to Virgin Gorda/the baths for a day

Definitely. Island hopping is one of the great things about the USVI and BVI. Might be stating the obvious but don’t forget your passports!

+1 Although I would not recommend the baths, unless you can get there really early (which seems unlikely if you take a group tour).

Do you enjoy day drinking on a beautiful beach? If you do, White Bay is a very good time. It’s more than just drinking, but that’s a big part of it. Hit up the Soggy Dollar if you go.

My kids loved Lime out, the floating taco restaurant, in St John. It was a pretty fun experience!

Jost is my favorite place! Absolutely recommend a day trip there. However, figure out how you want to get there. The boat trips from Cruz Bay are the most convenient, but also can be a little bit of drunken messes. We liked renting boats and captains (I can’t remember their names though, ask around by the docks) and going on our own. See if you can stop by Sandy Cay. It’s the most perfect little tropical island.

I’m afraid it is going to rain there much of next week 🙁

Any thoughts on what to do?

Are ferries out in bad weather?

Have you done BVI in one day, to and from St. John, using the ferry + commercial plane and back as I assume OP is asking?

If yes I’m curious about your itinerary.

Love the island hopping the Caribbean provides, but this sounds insane.

I’ve been going to St John for over a decade and we do a BVI excursion about once every 3 years. It can be a lot of fun, but if it’s your first time in St. John there are plenty of beaches to explore and hikes to do etc.

Also, it is common to see a forecast for rain and have that mean a 6 min sprinkle at 11am.

Enjoy!

I also go annually and agree with this. I wouldn’t go to BVI for a short trip, but a snorkel trip around St John and a stop at Lime Out is a great day. I recommend Salt Deck/Salty Daze Charters.

Also, don’t worry about the rain! You can still still snorkel at some beaches (check the wind direction), hike - the waterfall should be flowing at the reef bay hike, and walk around Mongoose Junction and shop. It’ll be a great trip either way!
