If you were an average student with B's and C's

Anonymous
Did you go to college? Or trade school?

If you went to college, what degree did you get and how much do you get paid annually?

I'm worried about my average non motivated kid who doesn't know what they want to be and am trying to steer them towards college and getting some degree that would at least help them land a decent job.

Advice appreciated.

I went to Va Tech. Graduated with an Economics degree. This was 4 years ago.

What was your GPA and ACT and SAT scores? What do you work as and what is your pay scale?

OP do you really think only straight A students go to college? Your kid will be fine.

Back in the '80s, I was a B/C student. I was accepted to UMBC (back when they took anybody) and got a Comp Sci. degree. I was earning six figures by time I was 30, mostly because of the dawn of the dot-com era in the '90s. These days UMBC is much more selective but my kid with a B average easily got into Towson for accounting.

You didn't get in with a B/C average unless your parents paid for a building.

What are the B/C grade in? Regular ed, honors, AP? My kid has lots of Cs in honors/AP level classes, but great AP scores and is getting merit aid at a lot of colleges.

Regular. In kid's MS, they bumped up all students scores since they were well below state average.

I had a B average (I don’t remember my GPA - it was the 90s. A couple As, a smattering of Cs, mostly a solid B/B- student). I went to college and eventually majored in English, started off as an admin assistant, moved to communications assistant, then publications assistant, then a web manager, and now I’m a writer/editor for a consulting company. I’m part time, but I’d make about $90k full time. It took several years for me to get settled, and I lived at home for a couple years while starting out, but it worked out. Your son will figure out his path too, even if it takes a few tries.

Getting a B and being a motivated student would be fine I guess. I worry that the focused sibling would be earning well and this DC would be working at low paying jobs and struggling financially. DC does work hard when needed but we need to push for it and yet this DC gets a B, while the sibling knows what they want and goes for it and gets straight A's. I worry about this one.

Thank you for this. It gives me hope.

I have a business degree from Towson and work at a fintech company. Your son may end up being good at sales and have a decent income, I've seen that happen.

C students run the world. Probably never truer than right now.

85.5 average in H.S. I went to Stony Brook for physics.

The A students work for the B students, the C students own the businesses, and the D students dedicate the buildings.
