SSAD - Advanced Math

Anonymous
Hi,

I don’t think my kid is a good candidate for full-time AAP, but I would like him in advanced math starting in 3rd grade. He’s doing division at home in 2nd grade and addition or whatever in school. I’d like it to match up a little more, and I also want him to have more advanced math now so he can be on a more competitive math track later. For some reason, he had a disappointing IReady score this fall (like 68 percentile or something). I think he can do better - are there any tests for math FCPS will recognize? Can I submit like worksheets of him doing multiplication tables? I am not really sure what to submit to help his case.

I don’t think multiplication tables is a good idea. Maybe some math word problems in G3.

Talk to the teacher, but our school used iReady for this. There's still spring iReady to come.

Try to find out more about what happened with the fall iready score. I was able to get an extensive report last year when dc was in gr 1 (this year the teacher was a bit more selective in what they shared but I think I could have learned more if I persisted). You may learn more about why your dc is underperforming* and you can find ways to address it in time for the next iready.

*Note, some children rush through the questions to get to the games! I also noticed my dc sometimes makes careless mistakes when completing tests and needed extra guidance on checking answers, etc.

Parent of a third-grader here. My DD qualified for advanced math at her school even though she had an i-Ready score in the high 70s from spring second grade (which we felt was low for her and we were concerned it would keep her out). Our school selects advanced math for third-grade based on a combination of second-grade teacher's recommendation, i-ready scores, and a pre-test at the start of third grade. She did very well on the third-grade pre-test and the second grade teacher strongly vouched for her, so the low-ish i-Ready score did not matter too much. She's doing well in advanced math and really likes moving at a faster pace.

Anyhow, I would ask your school how the school decides on advanced math placement. If the i-Ready is just one small part of it, I would not worry too much.
