Visit To Dentist After 30+ Years!

Anonymous
I am fifty-five & have not seen a dentist since I was in my mid-20’s.
I was a single Mother + I didn’t have any dental insurance…now that my kids are grown I have saved up some $$ to finally see a dentist!

My teeth are in good shape > I had a check-up (exam/xrays) today and was quoted $950 for a full teeth deep-cleaning.

I just went to a local clinic nearby - and will be paying in all ca$h - and was wondering if this price is on par with what a deep-cleaning costs.
No laser needed.

Thx!

It seems like a lot to me, but I have insurance and am out of state.

If you didn't have cavities, then you probably eat right and don't have gum disease, so what are they cleaning?

PP...so by deep cleaning...is it periodontal treatment called "scaling"?

Anything periodontal gets marked up.

Being clear about the procedure may help people comment more accurately.

I do not know what a deep cleaning is. It's high for a regular cleaning...but cheap for 30 years of buildup.vvIcwoujd ask how it differs from a standard cleaning and if the standard would be ok

I just needed deep cleaning (it was called “scaling and root planing” per my EOB) and it was $75 per tooth (I needed it for all 4 back molars). So if it’s that and you have a lot of areas that need it, then I guess $900 could be reasonable. For a regular cleaning, even my expensive non-insurance participating dentist charges $175.

And this is why I'm enjoying all the memes claiming Luigi was at Bible study on December 4 and not spending time reading the "what about his wife and children?" posts. We should be doing better than this.

Your story could be my own - too long between dentist visits, too many other expenses to manage without insurance. I have an appoint for cleaning scheduled in the New Year so I will be curious if I encounter the same response. Keep us posted.

Seems like a lot. I would just have them clean normally. How were your gums? If your teeth haven't all fallen out and you brushed and flossed regularly, I would be skeptical of this "deep cleaning" and not do it. Lots of scam dentists, especially at a "clinic"

good job, OP. i'm going next week for the first time in 6 years. hoping it won't be too disastrous.

You should never told them it was that long since you have been they are robbing you get the regular cleaning and keep going back every six months.

I am surprised that after 30 years all you need is 1 deep cleaning. I didn't see a dentist for 10 years and it took a lot more than that to clean up teeth, gums, fill grinding, etc.
I'd probably confirm what exactly a deep cleaning entails.

Man dentists these days holy crap
No op if they're no cavities just get a cleaning start flossing evey day and keep going back well find new on this ones trying to take advantage of you now.

950 is too much!
I would seek out a 2nd and even a 3rd opinion.
A regular, not deep, cleaning should suffice.
Like a mechanic, it seems like you are being upsells.

$950 for a cash payment heck no op. Go elsewhere.
