Maryland Senators want their DC land back

WTH are Cardin and VanHollen trying to deal here?

New Commanders stadium for the DC Air National Guard?

The very LAST thing Gov Wes Moore needs right now is an Air National Guard fighter wing full of 20-30 year old F-16’s that require all sorts of ongoing maintenance, even if it’s pad for by DoD.

Moore has demonstrated pretty clearly that despite his charm and good looks, he kinda sucks at being a chief executive in charge of a state budget.

Sounds good to me. Let MD have the fighter wing. It's not like DC controls its own National Guard, as we famously found out in 2020.

He’s such an incompetent leader that I am sure he’ll find a way that this will end up costing MD taxpayers a significant sum.

Can you explain your logic?

They don't want their land back, they want the air squadron in exchange for letting D.C. have the stadium. It's just a power play, not a land swap.

+1 The article explains this pretty clearly. They also want to know what Harris plans for the land in Landover once the Commanders leave the stadium.

What else is there to explain that wasn’t in the post?

This seems completely out of character for Van Hollen and Cardin. They never hesitate to dump on Republicans for trying to infringe upon DC sovereignty. Yet, they are punching down here. They seem like nice guys, but I’m embarrassed for them.

Also, tear down the stadium. DC needs more housing and really anything other than another stadium.

Don’t giving DC everything that it wants all the time, including free Federal parkland that they will transfer to a private individual does not equal punching down. The DC victimization complex runs too deep.

I spoke with someone close to this, and the whole thing comes down to the Maryland political delegation wanting fighter jets for the Maryland Air National Guard. Maryland currently has a Wing of A10 ground attack aircraft based at Martin State Airport in Baltimore county. They think the state needs air-to-air fighter/interceptor aircraft with secondary precision bombing capability, rather than ground attack aircraft like the A-10.

And it’s quite clear no one involved knows a damn thing about either aircraft.

So the whole thing is about egos. Wanting to have fighter jets instead of ground attack jets. As though Maryland needs either of them, frankly.

DC actually makes a better case for having fighter jets due to the ADIZ that surrounds the city, where having fighter/interceptor aircraft makes at least some sense.

But Maryland pols want fighter jets.

So stupid.

Maryland is a blue state and has no say in the matter.

Sure they do. If this bill has any hope of being attached to the CR this month, it needs Dem support. Or if it passes next year, it’ll still be subject to the filibuster. If Maryland senators want to block this so they can extract concessions from D.C., they can, it won’t matter which party is in charge.

There's not even a play for some air show or anything? Ridiculous!
