First time Ski Classes for kids Whitetail vs Liberty?

Anonymous
Hello,
Id like my kids to try out skiing this season. Any experiences with those two resorts regarding ski classes and lodging? Thanks!

My older learned to ski at Liberty during a very snowy winter. The instructor and “mountain” were great but their rentals are atrociously bad so I would recommend renting in the city and bringing the rentals with you.

IMO, the greens are better at Whitetail for beginners to learn.

I've taken my kids to both and both are fine. I'd give a slight edge to Whitetail. We stay at a cheap hotel nearby so not sure of the resort lodging options.

I second this. I learned to ski as an adult and much prefer the beginner area at Whitetail with a progression to sidewinder over the beginner area at liberty.

But both have incredible instructors that will be great for your kids so pick whichever works for you.

Both places are very crowded now that they're on the Epic pass. I recommend Bryce for a first timer. Their lessons are great and it is a nicer resort.

I’m the PP above and we taught DS at Whitetail.

The beginner area is off to the left, its own area, and separate from the rest of the mountain so you don’t have to deal with non-beginners. Agree that sidewinder is a great long run as the next progression. Then lastly, snow park is a great challenging green to finish the progression.

I also think the blues at Whitetail is much better then Liberty. More runs, longer, steeper and more challenging. Prepares your kid better for the next progression to black.

I think Liberty is less of a zoo in the era of Epic passes. Whitetail parking lot can get crazy backed up and it is generally so crowded. If it is your kids first time they don't need a bigger place, which is the real advantage of Whitetail.

I was likely a more cautious beginner because I learned as an adult, where kids tend to be fine pushing limits and pizza-ing down a slope, but I would hit the blues at liberty before the ones at WT. WT blues are pretty steep for beginners and more of blacks. Then again the entry into the blues at liberty (upper heavenly) is more of a s-show with lots of beginners wiping out.

I really don't like going either place BUT found their instructors were great both places when my kids were learning to ski.

Timerline also has a great ski school.

PP here. Yes, if your goal is slow and steady and cautious then agree blues better at Liberty. Short runs, less steep, less challenging.

Our goal was to get DS to be decent on the blues here so he could go out west and WT definately better for that since more challenging. We took him to Breckenridge for his 1st time out west and he did fine on their blues.

NP here. Would either of these ski resorts be a good place to take our kids for the first time (none of us have ever skied) for winter break? Our winter break plans seem to be falling through, and everyone said they'd be happy to learn to ski.

Our kids are 12-18.

If winter break isn't a good time to go to Whitetail or Liberty, when do people recommend we take our kids for lessons?

Do your kids have a random day off school that’s not MLK or Presidents? I’d go then or pull them a day. Winter break is unlikely to have good snow yet at these places.

+1. Highly unlikely that they will even be open during winter break and if so, not good. The window for east coast resorts are getting smaller and smaller. End of Jan and Feb your best bet for good base and OK conditions of its anything like last year.

You'll drive all the way up there and the conditions will be disappointing or the lifts closed. Just a warning. Don't let the kids get to excited about it
