DC - "No Right Turn On Red" - Why????

Anonymous
I've just noticed all the "new" (to me) signs for No Turn On Red. Why? It seems more dangerous for pedestrians crossing the street as cars that have been obeying the law (sitting there with no traffic coming, now try to turn while pedestrians/bikes are crossing. When are the cars supposed to go, especially on pedestrian heavy crosswalks? Sigh...I need to start going to the council meetings.

Drivers weren't actually stopping on red, and with the shift to gigantic commuter truck/SUVs drivers can't actually see pedestrians and do a lot more damage to them when they hit them. This is drivers once again playing themselves.

If the average driver was in a Fiat and actually followed the law, instead of an F-150 and doing whatever they wanted, you'd still be able to right on red. So its the drivers you need to talk to instead of the council.

Because Right Turn On Red is dangerous for pedestrians, and we have known that since at least the mid 1980s.

The drivers are supposed to turn on green, when there's nobody in the crosswalk. If there's somebody in the crosswalk when you have a green light, then you should wait.

It’s funny that the F150’s are catching strays over here!

Op, cars, of all shapes and sizes, were not stopping at the red before making a right. There were many near-miss accidents and accidents involving right turning vehicles and pedestrians.

I would not be surprised if Montgomery County passed a similar law because we have the same issues on this side of the border.

Because DDOT and the Council have been out of control since the pandemic.

At least it's not going to be enforced because they aren't adjusting the light timings.

If you want to be nice, you can wait for 5 seconds without honking and shouting at the people crossing the street.

But this is DC and most drivers are not nice.

At a busy intersection, this will never happen if they don't delay the Walk signal for pedestrians!! I've been nearly hit multiple times while in the crosswalk, with the walk signal, as cars turn in front of me or behind me trying to make the light! Let them turn on red! Put red light cameras to catch those people that don't come to a complete stop.

Montgomery County is going to start having more No Turn On Red signs too, starting in July 2025. As I recall, they will be at intersections with traffic lights, on county roads, in areas with lots of foot traffic (downtowns and "town centers"). I wish there would be more.

To be fair, I have noticed an increase in the delayed light changes for pedestrians in concert with the no turn on red signs in DC along my commute.

It's not delayed light changes for pedestrians, it's delayed light changes for drivers. Pedestrians get a walk sign, then a few seconds later drivers get a green light. So pedestrians get a head start on crossing, before the drivers start turning. That's only effective if there's also no turn on red for drivers.

I’m sick of it. I guess the plan is to install fail to stop cameras everywhere
