GWU

What do you think about George Washington in D.C.? Is it ever a better idea to go there than in-state UVA, W&M, UMD, VTech, etc. if you don't have any financial aid? What kind of person goes there?

My son attends the Elliott School of International Affairs as an undergrad. He turned down UMD et al because he wanted that particular school. I think he also appreciates the urban campus. Dorm is comfortable, food is decent. Luckily he received 20K/year merit aid because it's not cheap!

We considered it briefly but the price vs UMD just didn't make sense. We have a kid with special needs and I did read on this forum that they are very accommodating.

Even with $20k merit isn't it close to $70k/year which means it is more than twice the cost of UMD. Prob better to bank the difference for grad school or a first home.

Kid considered it but was overwhelmed by the very urban campus. It seems like students who are very independent and who aren’t looking for a traditional campus look/culture can thrive here.

It is very international. A lot of students who can full pay.

PP you replied to. We pay $65K a year. Full price is $85K. We can afford that, and grad school, for two kids. What you can afford depends on your budget, of course. UMD does not have anywhere near the coursework to cobble together a similar degree - not all colleges offer all the majors. But if my second kid wants a STEM major, then UMD will do fine!

Heck no it is not better than in-state W&M UVA or VT.

Third tier school that's not worth it without a huge discount.

GWU = kids who couldn't get into Georgetown

My kid turned down W&M for GWU, because academics and internship opportunities for his preferred major were better at GWU. UVA is more selective, and Georgetown even more so. For you to say that GWU kids are Georgetown rejects is... duh? Obviously they are. It doesn't make GWU a bad school. It's like saying most kids are Harvard rejects

Now if we're talking money, then YES, in-state is nearly always better than out-of-state.

This was a terrible decision.

??? That's stupid of you. My child is very happy at GWU. He visited W&M and hated it. He visited GWU and loved it. The dorms and food at GWU are much better than at W&M. He loves the urban campus and the profs of his major.

For us W&M is not in-state.
The slightly lower acceptance rate of W&M compared to GWU, and the price differential between the two, are not enough to overlook the fact that my kid DOESN'T LIKE W&M.

Where do you get off, hmm?

Different poster here. You should’ve clarified that he was out of state for William and Mary. That’s a difference. Nobody in their right mind would turn down W&M in-state to go to GW

PP you replied to. I disagree. We can afford to send him wherever he wants. I would never send my kid somewhere they didn't want to go. He got into our flagship state U, at less than half the price of GWU, and turned that down too. I'm perfectly fine with that. If there were budget constraints, I would have told him not to apply to privates in the first place.

You don't get to judge other people's college decisions if you don't know their budget and their priorities.
