Fresh turkey OK?

Anonymous
Uncooked turkey is only good in the fridge for 1-2 days. How are grocery stores selling fresh turkeys a week before Thanksgiving? Will these be OK on Thursday? Please don’t make fun of me for asking!

Do you really think your "fresh" turkey was butchered today?

I’m not a big fan of turkey, but I can imagine that, especially before Thanksgiving, the meat is stored in specially engineered cooling facilities. Those are far more advanced than regular fridges

No one thinks that. Why would you post this?

Wait, what? I bought a fresh turkey at the grocery store last Thursday. It has been sitting in my fridge for the past week waiting for Thanksgiving. Is there guidance that tells me I need to throw it out because it is not good anymore?!?

OP clearly knows nothing about how butchering works.

There should be a sell by date on your fresh turkey. Cook before the . You’re fine.

From OP - you’re right I don’t. That’s why I posted the question. Do you have info or advice to share?

Just don’t leave it on the patio!

It’s likely defrosted.
For a fresh turkey, pre order one from a local farm and pick up (ready to cook) day before holiday.

Don’t ask stupid questions on DCUM for starters.

Oh my. You must be quite a miserable person, making it your hobby to troll and insult people on DCUM. I hope you find some joy and peace this holiday season.

I personally would never buy it more than a day or two ahead, but I know people do it. I don’t feel it’s safe in a home refrigerator that might not actually be 40 degrees max, but I am food safety paranoid.

Anyway, the answer to your question is that they are stored for transport and at stores at a much lower temperature than your home refrigerator (like 26 degrees).

DCUM would lose all advertising revenue.

But seriously, provide useful advice or go away.
