Senior playing JV

Anonymous
DD attends independent girls school with good sports teams. She has been playing basketball since middle school. She was on the JV team in 9th grade - and has stayed on JV every year. Even as a senior, she is still on JV. She was pretty good and had decent playing time in 9th. She is generally athletic - in good shape, runs well, good ball skills. She goes to all the practices and games and overall is a fine player - nothing great, but not bad either. Is it weird to still be playing JV as a senior? Is this due to DD not working hard enough or not great coaching?

ask the coach

You said it yourself, numerous times, she is good, she is fine, she is not great. Yes, it is unusual. She must be just good enough for JV but not good enough for varsity. If she was on varsity she probably would ride the bench but at least she can help out the JV team some

I’m sorry, OP. Stuff like this can be hard and all we feel for our kids when it happens. Been there. Likely the coach feels she just isn’t good enough to get playing time on varsity (and coach may be using that spot to train up /get reps for a player who they expect to contribute next year).

DD can ask coach if she feels the need (but probably not much point as DD is a senior) but you should not do so.

Good for her for continuing to play even if it’s JV this year. That shows good sportsmanship and an enjoyment of the sport. It shows her ego is not getting in her way. That’s a great quality!

You are lucky that the school allows it. In our school you can play on JV only as freshman and sophomore. Juniors and seniors who don't make the varsity have no options.

I didn't know seniors were allowed to play on JV

This happened to me many years ago.

There were some girls who made a few rude remarks to me (which burned me up inside at the time) but at the same time I happily enjoyed getting plenty of playing time my senior year. It was a great diversion from the usual senior year stress.

Looking back now, that was the best thing to happen to me. I continued playing my sport recreationally and still do.

I know in the WCAC seniors are not allowed on any JV teams.

At our k-12, to make varsity bb you really need to be on an AAU team and get a lot of playing time year round. Talk to the coach, but my guess is she plateaued in 9th or 10th and the girls who are playing a lot outside of school have continued to improve dramatically

I understand that from a pride perspective not making the varsity team can be tough but if your school allows seniors to play JV count your blessings. Not only does it mean she gets to actively play for four years, it is her best path to potentially being a leader on that team which is a true bonus. At DD’s all girls school there were a handful of sports that consistently had seniors playing on JV so it was not at all something that girls got made fun of for.

At a lot of schools seniors are not allowed to play on JV. If they don’t make V, they get cut. There are only so many spots on varsity and they are usually taken by kids who play the sport year round on club or AAU teams. There are only so many spots on JV and they are usually taken by players who are expected to develop into varsity players.

So yeah, it is a little weird for her to be playing JV as a senior. However, there must be space for her at her school and since she likes it, it’s fine.

This was my thought! Makes me like her as a person, and she is probably going to keep playing for fun for life, which is a great way to stay healthy and make friends.

This. In public school she would have been cut entirely.
