s/o will there be a lot of kids out on Jan 2/3?

Building off the Thanksgiving week days off thread, are there a lot of kids out on the Thursday/Friday of New Year's week (Jan 2/3)? Trying to decide whether to extend a holiday trip.

We’re flying home on Jan 1. Jan 2 and 3 are full school days. My kid is in 9th.

We’ll be in school those days. I think that attendance will be better as they are full days and winter break is already long this year.
Thanksgiving is too tempting to skip because of the two stupid half days plus Wednesday is an awful travel day. I bet they’d get better attendance for one full day on Monday but I know they can’t do that due to the stupid 180 day rule.

Not in high school. If you're in advanced and AP classes, you can't afford to miss a full day of school.

I have one in middle school and one in elementary. They are missing both days. We are visiting family overseas and aren’t leaving until the day after Christmas.

Then it might be constructive for you. When your child gets to high school, consider if they're mature enough to be capable of catching themselves up before having them register for advanced placement courses. Things come up, sometimes outside your and their control. Don't set them up for failure.

This year is a "great" Winter break year for these parts and the hard 180 day rule which requires awful makeup days if weather cancellations would result in fewer days are the reason school is open January 2&3. The last 2 years January 2 was off but that was to provide 7 weekdays off, but with 8 days off combined with the hard 180 rule it was too difficult to make the break a full two weeks. Then again you think this is crazy wait till next year! With December 23 on a Tuesday, Christmas Eve Wednesday and Christmas on Thursday for the 1st time in a decade it's practically a forced two weeks but even that is a challenge with the hard 180. Even though it's only 2 extra days it potentially involves the school year being OVER a WEEK LONGER!
2024-25 August 26-June 13
2025-26 August 25-June 22
That is SIX weekdays and 10 total days longer even though it should only be TWO weekdays longer although it would be four total days longer!

I don’t blame them because who wants to be in school until June 22. Besides teachers, the kids at the HS level would suffer the most.

In high school, Jan 2/3 are going to be two instructional days to start a new unit. My child would be unhappy missing that x7 classes - it will be a lot to make up, and there will probably be a test in the following week.
