Will Janey return to DCPS if Gray wins?

Anonymous
Is there any guarantee Rhee will stay beyond the school year if Fenty wins? I haven't seen details of her contract, but I'm curious to know why some people seem to be basing their residency on her tenure alone.

Janey will not be coming back. First, it would be a pay cut. Secondly, while most people agree he was a really nice guy with good intentions, there is still lingering frustration with him among some politicians and long-time DC residents.

It's easy for Gray to say nice things about Janey while he's in the room. It delays any need to have to float a Rhee replacement before the election. But nobody in the education space would pull a Petraeus and take a demotion because it was the right thing to do.

Personally, I'd be fine with the chief academic officer taking on the chancellor role. Although I don't know much about her beyond her bio, her role seems to cover most of the core DCPS operations anyway.

We have a contract. We have standards. We have IMPACT (in theory). We have RTTT money. We have building modernizations. (We even have DCPS facebook pages.)

In my dream world, we'll leave the political debates to the many pundits in town and let the rest of us get on with working with our schools.

I don't think so. The Newark story makes him sound like damaged goods, though details are vague. Actually, nonexistent!

I think if Fenty won Rhee would stay for at least one more year. It doesn't look good for him at this point.

Newark superintendent Clifford Janey's contract is not renewed

I hope not!

One more school year as in June or one more calendar year? To me it's the same. If Gray wins, it's not like Rhee would leave the next day like Sarah Palin. Would she?

Janey was not a good leader. He did next to nothing in terms of decision making.

Yes Rhee is harsh and brash, but she's getting things done. We need to reelect Fenty to keep her. The most damage to school systems comes from the revolving door in leadership.

i totally disagree with this post. rhee is taking a lot of credit for work that clifford janey put into place. test scores rose in her first 2 years, dropped in her 3d, for elementary kids. there's no way anything SHE did had an effect on test scores her first or second year. she hadn't had a chance to do all that firing! i'm sure she has good intentions, but her lack of any classroom experience turns me off. she is overpaid and overhyped.

even if you like rhee, so you vote for fenty, who is to say she'll stay on for more than another year (as PPs have pointed out)? she's married to a guy on the west coast!! she ain't stayin'.

Janey did a lot, adopted Massachusetts standards, we felt it in the classroom, he also took a lot of heat for closing some schools, so he was moving on that, too. Rhee is getting things done but I will always believe she could have gotten just as much done, and maybe more, with some humanity and intellectual honesty. Arne Duncan got a lot done in Chicago but he brought groups together.

Rhee: One more year, I am speculating, not sure, another school year -- if Fenty pulls a rabbit out of a hat and wins this thing. Which does not seem likely.

For God's sake I hope not. For all better purposes it was Dr. Carstarphen who actually did the on-hands of school operations. If I had my druthers that would be my choice...again Dr. Janey was the school board's 3rd choice. We all know how dysfunctional they were at the time...and was grasping at straws. Why would anyone adhere to Janey knowing that his past record is not glowing and what is with going back for damaged goods?

Has anyone scene the documentary that was produced during Janey's tenure on the Newark Schools and was featured at the Sundance Festival. If that is any indication...well EVERYONE better call your real estate agent and move out of DC on the first thing moving.

Also the IB program for Eastern will be kicked into the Anacostia River, if Janey should return. He told a group of Eastern supporters during his tenure...there's so much he wanted to do to Eastern but they won't let him. Now who was the "they", well I'll say this the group he was speaking to was African-American so your assumption can almost assure that the "they" wasn't the African-Americans.

I loved his reference to a certain principal as a "cool cat." That just makes me so groovy inside, thinking about his pending return. Love, Peace and Soul!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [Sarcasm sent and hopefully felt].

Rhee ain't staying...once she's married. Merely because her quotes and actions now as Chancellor does not resonate as much once she becomes a sitting Mayor's wife. Simply put, you will not be able to separate the implications regardless the east and west coast differences. Beginning day one after the marriage...everything she does in DC will be put to questions in California and vice-a-versa. I give her a completion year...as not disrupt her children school year...and she will leave married, pregnant and retirement secured financially from the district. In essence she will leave with more than she came with...and in the long run that is what it is all about.

Given that it was under Janey that Shepherd, Cooke and Thomson (and one other school that has since dropped off) were all encouraged to go IB, I doubt he'd kill it at Eastern.

Originally he talked about setting up Eastern on the Boston Latin model, but that got shucked by Rhee.

Janey was saddled with facilities and special ed, something that's off Rhee's plate. It would be interesting to see what he could accomplish if her had her power and funding.

It's sad that on a forum called DC Urban Moms there is a thread that basically says Rhee will leave once she gets married, like she's some sort of marriage-seeking debutant from the 50s just biding her time until she can hook a good man. If the roles were reversed, do you honestly think people would be arguing that Mike Rhee would likely quit to be with his wife who works across the country?

Thank you for this. I was wondering if I was the only one thinking such talk was ignorant hen-pecking.

I agree.

Plus she might also have problems if she wants to move her kids out of the area given that her ex is here. If they have joint custody, he might kick up all holy hell if she wants to take the kids with her.
