We will be moving to fcps, Longfellow MS in late January from another state. My daughter is currently in advanced math, so she is taking algebra 1 right now. Not sure if she will be automatically placed in algebra 1 in Longfellow as well, or she has to take placement test first?
Second question is that if we want to apply AAP, is cogat test or other similar test a must? Thank you! |
Call the school. |
Parents ought not leave this to chance. FCPS can be random, and their standard processes do not always work well.
Observe that DC is in Algebra 1 now, and then ask that DC be placed in Algebra 1. Do not beg the question whether a placement test is needed and do not beg the question about process. Just appear confident they will do as requested. In short, make it easy for them to do as you want them to do. |
You can place her in Algebra 1. I would hope it would be automatic if she is taking it at her current school but you can place her in the class. FCPS might pushback a bit but know that you can place her in Algebra 1. |
Believe this is correct. But call Longfellow to be certain (they are very responsive). OP: a word about Longfellow: - it is an advanced and extremely competitive academic environment. Both of my teens are fairly recent Longfellow grads; one is at TJ; the other is taking 4 APs and a DE class as a junior. In your daughter’s 7th grade. Algebra 1 class, all the kids will be significantly advanced and are used to an accelerated pace. If your daughter struggles at first, don’t worry. The region serving Longfellow has ample supplementation resources. While we never used any of them, other Longfellow parents have mentioned Mathnasium, Kumon, Tutoring Club, and a few others - all here in McLean. There is even free online tutoring offered by FCPS, including math. Don’t hesitate to reach out. |
Very useful, thank you! |
