| We are looking to get out of CYA, we're unhappy with the coaches and the teams, my child doesn't want to do travel but the level of rec playing is atrocious. The instant a girl gets good, they leave for Valor, and the rec teams are just really, really bad (usually the girls who leave for Valor are the ones with parents who coach, so the coaches are new every year, too. Does this happen everywhere? Are there no good, stable rec teams anywhere? What would be a better option for current U9/3rd grade girls? What have your experiences been? |
I would go with GFR. VYS rec is a joke. It’s all in house only and does not participate in any all star tournaments. Everyone I know at GFR is very happy. It’s a better choice. |
Not surprised to hear this considering Valor takes everyone who tries out. The kids don’t even have to be that good; they will just get placed on the third or fourth team. It’s just a big and expensive social club for most of them. But I do agree it makes CYA that much worse. I would think anywhere that doesn’t accept everyone who tries out for travel would be better. The kids who don’t get a travel offer but still like soccer would theoretically stay with rec. |
OP here, I don't see what all star tournaments have to do with anything. My kid doesn't care about that, she just wants to play soccer with other kids who know how to play and aren't just playing because their parents are forcing them to do it. |
It’s rec soccer! One lousy league is no different from the next. Stop taking up time in this thread with dumb questions about rec. |
I hope you get the help you need. Your primary care physician can recommend a few good therapists to help you work through your issues. |
You know your child isn't going to go pro, right? |
Its a hard question to answer because as you stated coaches are all volunteers in rec and they leave when their kids get on travel teams, which happens around the U9 or U10 age usually. I dont think anyone can give you consistent feedback on a rec team. Its going to differ season to season. Just pick the one that's most convenient to your home. Fwiw my son had an excellent experience playing for FPYC in younger ages. But I think we lucked on to a good team with coaches that stuck around for a few seasons. By U10 he, and most of the other kids moved on to travel leagues. We stayed friends with a teammate that remained in rec and his mom said the new coach left a lot to be desired. So its really not something you can get intel on, unless maybe you find a personal friend who refers you to their team in the club. |
Cool story bro. |
| Ugh, I can see why this forum used to require user names. Between this and bashing a bunch of 12 year old girls, you're the worst. |
| VYS is well run with lots of programs. |
So we can all agree it would be fantastic if rec was filled with athletic kids who enjoyed the sport but also aren't ready to commit to one sport year round 5 days a week. The problem is its not, it's now filled with kids who's parents sign them up to try to get some exercise. So the previous mentioned kids whose parents are vilified on here are clubs 3rd team players. To the OP there are alot of people in your position the best bet is a lower tier travel team. At least on the girls side the current state of rec soccer is awful if your kid cares about trying. |
| NOT SYA rec, that's for sure. Complete s-show and overpriced. |
I guess I'm just not sure how I feel about paying $3000/year for my child to play on a lower tier travel team. If they had something in between travel and rec, that would be ideal. I was hoping to maybe find a rec program that offers something like that? |
Well why don't you get on your magic unicorn and fly off to the wonderful world of fairyland. They have plenty of options that you described there. |
