We are looking to get out of CYA, we're unhappy with the coaches and the teams, my child doesn't want to do travel but the level of rec playing is atrocious. The instant a girl gets good, they leave for Valor, and the rec teams are just really, really bad (usually the girls who leave for Valor are the ones with parents who coach, so the coaches are new every year, too. Does this happen everywhere? Are there no good, stable rec teams anywhere? What would be a better option for current U9/3rd grade girls? What have your experiences been?
I would go with GFR. VYS rec is a joke. It’s all in house only and does not participate in any all star tournaments. Everyone I know at GFR is very happy. It’s a better choice.
OP here, I don't see what all star tournaments have to do with anything. My kid doesn't care about that, she just wants to play soccer with other kids who know how to play and aren't just playing because their parents are forcing them to do it.
Its a hard question to answer because as you stated coaches are all volunteers in rec and they leave when their kids get on travel teams, which happens around the U9 or U10 age usually. I dont think anyone can give you consistent feedback on a rec team. Its going to differ season to season. Just pick the one that's most convenient to your home. Fwiw my son had an excellent experience playing for FPYC in younger ages. But I think we lucked on to a good team with coaches that stuck around for a few seasons. By U10 he, and most of the other kids moved on to travel leagues. We stayed friends with a teammate that remained in rec and his mom said the new coach left a lot to be desired. So its really not something you can get intel on, unless maybe you find a personal friend who refers you to their team in the club.
