Federal employees and 2025 vacations?

Anonymous
I know this is very very low on the list of concerns for federal employees now. But, a close relative is getting married internationally next summer(where my family is from). I had always planned on going but haven't put in leave, bought tickets, etc. Now I feel stressed about 1)spending the money and 2)being out of contact for a week+ and then coming back to a RIF or something. I'm probably overthinking this? What are other feds at vulnerable agencies doing about their future time off?

Why do you think you’ll be impacted by a RIF?

Have you opened a newspaper in the past month?

You won't prevent a RIF by not taking a vacation for the next four years (or whenever Trump decides to vacate the Presidency).

Your employer is restructuring and many times that comes with RIFs. Literally every person who doesn’t work for the federal government has likely experienced this, it’s frankly astonishing how frail our government employees are at just the *thought* of being impacted at their job.

I have tentative plans to take a long vacation abroad this coming spring and am now also rethinking it because of money + possible chaos at my agency. I’m trying to talk myself out of this mindset but it’s hard. I love my job but I’m really anxious about what’s to come.

All this proves is that the federal workforce is overloaded with Democrats who are paranoid and should be purged not for political affiliation but for irrationality.

Idiot. I’m a fed and have no reason to expect a RIF. Unless the OP knows she’s deadweight.

Well, feds did exchange the option of higher pay for stability plus lower pay.

I would go ahead And plan for the trip but maybe see if you could get trip insurance in case you have to cancel.

In the real estate forum, I suggested that the market would slow down as buyers gut fearful, and people there scoffed at the idea. But it seems I am correct: If people are too scared to plan vacations, they're definitely going to be too scared to be buying houses.

i don't generally put in leave or buy tickets for things more than a month or two away, so can't help there. But RIFs generally take a year to organize and execute, and OPM runs all gov RIFs. Also RIFs most affect those with the least seniority, which is the opposite of what doge et al want to accomplish.

Literally nothing will actually happen over the course of a week or two. Now, if this is a trip that would cut into your emergency funds and normally you run without any emergency funds, then yeah, you might want to reconsider.

Actual RIFs seem very unlikely to me. Of course no one knows but if they have any brains at all they’ll just rely on attrition.
