DH and I are moving from DC to the NYC area and we're having a hard time narrowing down our suburb search. We're in Chevy Chase MD now and are very happy here, fwiw. DH will be commuting to Hudson Yards, but we don't really want to consider NJ. Instead we're considering Old Greenwich, Riverside, Cos Cob, Larchmont, Scarsdale, Rye, Chappaqua and Mamaroneck. We love smaller town vibes and are looking for good public amenities (lots of parks, well funded schools and libraries), but are scared off a bit by the high property taxes in Westchester.
Connecticut looks much better in that regard but beyond Greenwich the commute starts to get very long, and we're put off by the reputation of hedge fund money and showiness in Greenwich. We're well enough off to not be concerned about what other people have or don't have, but I want to be able to go food shopping without putting on an outfit and not worry that people are judging. We're Jewish and go to a reform synagogue. Are we worrying too much about Greenwich? Any help would be really appreciated! |
If you really like Greenwich for all the other reasons, it seems like you could decide to not care what people think about your grocery shopping attire and be very happy. But I don't live there, so I'm no authority. |
Darien
All of the towns that you mentioned are very nice. I have friends in Greenwich that love it. they are not super wealthy. All of those towns are going to have wealthy people though. What about Long Island - Garden City. Ridgewood in NJ is nice or Chatham or Summit. |
Hudson Yards from grand central isn’t ideal. Penn station is much better so NJ or LI. |
Not sure why a CC resident would rule our NJ. Check out Ridgewood |
Agree. Also I would not recommend Darien if you are Jewish. |
Greenwich is more diverse than you'd think it is. And I would not rule out NJ---look at Westfield and Summit. |
i understand why you would rule out NJ as would i.
our personal shortlist is: bronxville (love) scarsdale rye greenwich new canaan (love) Armonk possibly. darien is not the nicest, weirdly, and chappaqua is not a great downtown. Mamaroneck is... fine. |
Another Ridgewood vote here. I grew up there and couldn’t recommend it more for what you are looking for. |
Would not live in Bronxville or New Canaan if Jewish |
Hoboken |
Greenwich is good. I grew up there. There's a lot of hidden wealth among the show offs. |
Lucien's Grove, Daleford, Excelon, Ridertow. |
Hoboken is a city, not a suburb. |
Westport but it is far. So Greenwich instead or Scarsdale. |
