How many schools in total?

DS has a list of 10 privates and 6 publics. Of those, 1 of the privates and 3 of the publics have no supplements.

He is a high stats kid (sorry!) and trying for a bunch of reaches.

So far he has applied to all the publics and 2 of the privates (one ED). Which means 8 more to go. Is this crazy? It seems crazy to me.

How many is your kid applying to?

Only your family can decide that.

I applied to 7 in the 90s.

My kid applied to 8, but had 11 as possible start of senior year.

16 seems like a lot to me, but I know it isn’t uncommon these days.

16 is in the average range these days. IMO, Reaches are a total crap shoot, so the more reaches the more total applications.

I don't think it's crazy. My similar kid last year applied to 20. Most were reaches.

Our private HS counselor has guided our student to apply to a total of 10 schools, including our state flagship.

I think we’ve topped out at 17.

1 auto admit to UT
3 safeties
Wash u, uva, Georgetown, mich, unc, ucla, Berkeley, Georgia tech - all reaches (some more than others)
All done.
Let the odds be forever in our favor.

It's likely going to end up at 16. So far, 2 private schools and 12 publics. There's one more private for RD and *maybe* one more public, but only if they prep the app in the next 6 days.

20-22

Already applied to 10 or 11.

The only issue I have is that your kid basically ruins the chances for other kids when they submit a throwaway to a place like VT it JMU or some other state school.
There isn’t a reasonable reason to apply to more than ten schools because after that pint, you can’t tell me that he would rather go to number 12, 13, 14 if he got into any of 1-10.
And 1-10 should include a balance of reach, target, and backup. (3-2-2….or 2-3-2)

Oops I meant 4-3-3… or 3-4-3

That sounds about right if a bunch are reaches.

My kid is applying to total of 7 colleges, including 3 public and 4 private. Visited about 25 colleges and targeted where only really wants to go. High scores/grades. We will see.

It sounds like random prestige hunting as it's unlikely those schools have much in common, unless only applying for CS or engineering.

10...3 sure things, 2-3 strong targets, 3 or so higher target/low reach, one lottery reach (ivy)
