Help me Decide Where to buy a House (Montgomery County)

Anonymous
I know I'll get flamed for this, but here goes. We have around 950K to spend and would like to stay in semi-close in Montgomery County. I've been feeling increasingly disappointed by what 950K can buy. I want a home that is ready to go, in good shape. I don't mind cosmetic updating, but don't want to take on major remodeling. Where can I find this that still offers good schools and friendly neighbors? Or do I have to move to Gaithersburg/Germantown? Help please!

Size doesn't matter? Do you have kids? Pets? Hobbies? YOu need to give us something to go on.

OP here- we have 2 kids under 3 and will likely have 1 more in the next 1-2 years. No pets. Would ideally like 4 bedroom home with small-medium sized yard. Thanks again!

Try Luxmanor, Old Farm, North Bethesda - good schools (Walter Johnson cluster) - short driving distance to White Flint and/or Grovesnor Metro.

http://franklymls.com/MC7276795 (a little over your price range)

Also, you may need to wait a bit in these clusters - there's not alot of stock available at your price point - and generally beginning of September is just starting the second season of real estate.

Also try Kensington

Kensington Parkwood Elementary School has excellent reputation - and feeds into Walter Johnson.

Just saw this house on realtor.com. See if it works. If not, just pop in different zip codes and see what is available. It might make your search easier.

If you decide to go Gaithersburg--try the North Potomac/Kentlands area (20878 zip)...there is some nice, pretty new stuff available in your price range.

Fallsmead in Rockville. Great schools (feeds into Thomas Wootton). Close to 270 / metro and has a great neighborhood feel versus an urban feel.

DH and I are currently living (renting) in Gaithersburg, and I can see why you ask your question this way. We're also hoping to purchase in a "high quality" school zone, but are much removed from your cash situation. I don't think you'll have any trouble finding what you wish. As others have mentioned, North Potomac, Bethesda, etc, all those have beautiful homes for sale in excellent school zones, if you have over $650K, from what I'm seeing.

Kensington is great bang for your buck (by MoCo standards, of course), as long as it's not in Einstien district.

Kensington is fantastic! Two of the three school clusters are very good.

To know, which 2 clusters are these? Thanks

Kensington -- Town of feeds into Walter Johnson and some parts south of "the Town of" feeds into BCC. These are the two "good" ones.

Some other parts of Kensington (the western side) go to Walter Johnson--like Parkwood and Kensington Estates. For those, check out houses zoned for Kensington Parkwood Elementary, many of which fall in zip codes are 20814 and 20895.

So depressing to hear (from the lack of responses) that $950k doesn't get you into Whitman district.

Try Glen Echo, Glen Echo Heights. It would be one of the older houses but it's not a bad place to start (that's where we started, and eventually moved up). Even Wood Acres and Springfield might have some houses in that range. In BCC district try Westgate.
