New lady golfer - need advice!

Anonymous
Hello all! I finally caved to my husband and started learning golf. And as I get into it, I'm realizing there is a lot to learn beyond the simple rules of the course. I'm specifically talking about expected attire and other subtle aspects of golf etiquette. I'm 37, average build--maybe a little extra after kids--wondering which brands are considered appropriate both on the course and in the club house. Maybe this seems obvious to people who've grown up with the sport, but I see a bunch of regular sports brands with some golf clothes, and then some luxury labels with pieces that they say will work on the course, but I'm not sure that they are comfortable even if they are fashionable. And then of course there is a matter of being age appropriate without being frumpy. I haven't built out a full golf wardrobe yet, but I have learned that many pieces aren't practical, or made for the sport, so I'm looking for advice. What brands should be on my radar? What performance things do I need to know to evaluate different products? How do you manage club rules and still look and feel good out there? Ok, that's probably enough. TIA for your suggestions.

I'm a new golfer too. I've been wearing skirts for my lessons up until now, but I guess I need pants for the fall/spring. I too would love any advice you have!

Hello fellow lady golfer! I am 39 and have been playing since 2021. I wear golf skirts and polos with a sweater or windbreaker on top for extra cool weather. (I have footjoy and adidas golf shoes, skirts from Lady Hagen - found at Dicks - and random polos.)

I personally find it difficult/undesirable to play in sub-50 weather so no specific advice on a “winter” golf wardrobe. In general, the preppier, the better.

OP chiming in again. Hello other newbies and everyone else who will read this. Please share some brands that are worth looking into that work across all situations--playing, socializing, etc. Thanks!!!

You mention club rules. Are you playing at a country club? If so, what is the dress code?

If you’re at a club, do they have a pro shop? You can buy a few things there and while you’re shopping, you can confirm that the items meet the dress code.

Husband plays on public courses, and when invited by friends, has played some of the country clubs. I'm learning at a public facility, but a good friend from grad school is a member of a country club in Chevy Chase. She is excited that I'm learning, and has suggested playing at her club once I feel comfortable. I'm sporty so the mechanics are coming along and I will hold my own on the course, but I definitely need guidance about the subtle etiquette and dress codes for ladies golf. DH not really any help because golf attire for men is pretty standard.

I like a long top when I golf. Lands End usually has extra long polos in various sleeve lengths. If you do go out in chilly weather an insulated vest allows for better arm/shoulder motion than most jackets

We get it, you want OP to stumble around like an idiot. Grow up and be helpful or go troll some other thread.

Female golfer (age 41)

Here are some of my faves:
Puma golf dresses
Athleta golf skorts
Adidas sleeveless shirts
PGA brand pants on Amazon/Dicks
Form fitting vests
Puma or Ecco golf shoes

In general, Nike, Adidas, and Puma will be good for the price. Too many brands make stuff that is impractical or not worth the extra money. Your nearest PGA Superstore will have all of these, plus more.

Other random tips:
—Do NOT buy racerback tops. Those work for tennis, but most courses will not allow them. Women should look for sleeveless shirts; no tank tops.
—No jeans. Ever.
—Fall/winter golf is all about layers. In the 40s, I’m likely wearing a sleeveless shirt, a long sleeve pullover, a thin jacket, and a vest. And as the round goes, I’ll mix and match as necessary.
—Winter hats are very normal on a course.
—Most clubs will not require a collar on women’s shirts. Only for men. But be conservative.
—Hats in a club house (minus the locker room) is a big no-no. Some clubs will relax this for women since hair is a bigger issue.

OP here - thanks for leads.

In addition to the brands mentioned by everyone who posted, I went down a bunch of rabbit holes and came away with a few conclusions that I'm curious to get additional perspective on.

1. There are a lot of women's golf brands selling stuff that's pretty skimpy--would anyone dare to wear it? If yes, are you in perfect shape?

2. Malbon, g/fore, Macade, and Peter Millar seem to have the best balance of fashion, performance, and conservative styling.

3. I don't think any of the most fashionable brands will flatter my body--ugh.

4. Jofit Mina 17" seems to be the only skort that's made for women who aren't trying to steal someone's husband by parading around in a cocktail napkin.

5. I have a lot more research to do to get a decent wardrobe together before our vacation in January.

Happy weekend, all--hope you find time for a few swings while we still have this great weather.
