What experiences have people had with private elementary schools providing challenging/accelerated coursework on STEM? My 2e child is very keen on learning STEM (though needs support in some areas) and bored with their current coursework. (I'm specifically asking about privates --already got lots of info on public). Would love names of schools.
Many thanks! |
NOT Ideaventions, they don’t handle ND well. Maybe Nysmith if the commute isn’t a non-starter.
Where are you located? |
Nysmith is not really focused on 2e… |
Thanks, we're in Montgomery County, so VA is not really an option. |
Not focused on, but they can handle both support and acceleration. There’s really not any school that is *focused* on 2e. There are a number of schools that specialize in one or more types of ND, but many of those cannot challenge a gifted child. It depends to a degree what the “2” is and what kind of support is needed. |
Just continuing my own train of thought, depending on what your kid needs, you might be best served by finding a school that can support and possibly remediate (depending on the diagnosis) whatever the ND is, and supplement with outside math and science enrichment. For our 2e (dyslexia, mild ADHD), a Montessori environment that allowed for pullouts with an O-G reading specialist for the early years (to 5th) and then a mainstream school with an excellent academic center was a very successful route. |
Can you kindly let me know what that mainstream school with a excellent academic center was? |
Congressional. It’s in VA and the director has changed since my DC was there, so our experience may be out of date, but for those in NoVA I highly recommend it. Not great for MoCo though, sorry. |
