| DCD had one missing assignment. She had a lot of competing deadlines and didn't turn in one assignment as it was a P and would have had minimal impact on the final grade. The P's are 10% of the final grade. The due date was in mid-October and was recorded in her gradebook as a -0-. Well tonight it changed from a "P" to a "TA". "TA" assignments are 90% of the grade and now her grade went from an "A" to a "B". Is that even allowed? Anything she can do? |
|
If it was accidentally marked as PP, and the teacher corrected it to AT, there is nothing you/she can do. If it was really supposed to be PP, your child can inquire why the category changed.
As a parent, this seems like a good teaching moment about the importance of each assignment. She can still get an A during the second quarter and this B will be erased. In fact, it will keep her more motivated. |
| Lots of last minute grading with no feedback. It’s obnoxious |
I disagree. Kids will sometimes have 20 homework assignments due in a week and if they’ve been out sick, trying to make up all of them while they keep up with current assignments might not be the best use of their time. I think it’s unfair for a teacher to change the nature of the assignment in this way. |
Or, a lot of teachers don't grade and wait till the 9th hour and just do the absolute minimum. |
| Regardless of what was posted in Synergy, what did the teacher SAY in class about the assignment? Mistakes happen- if an assignment was accidentally entered incorrectly, that’s on your daughter. |
Most teachers aren’t lazy. They are extremely overworked. Grading and planning are essential tasks, yet we are given almost no time during our work day to complete either of them. I receive about 2.5 hours of dedicated time a week for these tasks, which often take me 20-25 hours to finish. (And sometimes that 2.5 hours is taken away from me.) |
Feel free to write your local representatives on how obnoxious it is that your needs aren’t being prioritized. Let us know how it works out. M Kay? |
| OP, has your child reached out to the teacher to find out what happened and what prompted the change? |
OP here. Yes, she has but she has not heard back yet. The assignment was showing in Canvas as a P until yesterday evening. Then it became a TA. This was literally the only assignment she missed for all of her subjects and there were times she stayed until 4am to get the work done bc of the group nature of some of the assignments ( partners don’t share their part until midnight then she stayed up to pull everything together). That’s why it’s so crushing for her. |
Is today national jerk day? You get the prize. |
This. Dc has had grades in 4 classes drop during the end of last week because lazy teachers held on to assignments and then dropped them in the grade book with zero feedback. Too late to resubmit anything, not that anyone would know what CAN be resubmitted since there's no longer any (R)s next to the assignments that can be retsken. If this was a corporation it would be out of business. |
It really is terrible. My DC had a teacher drop an entire month's worth of grades into the grade book last week and there was still grades missing as of Friday. And that was only one of their teachers that was inputing multiple grades. Screw being able to resubmit or retake things, it would be nice just to have feedback prior to end of quarter when grades are due. At this point I feel like classes should just go to Pass/Fail/High Pass, because this is ridiculous every quarter. |
Lazy teachers? Wow. What a loser comment. Your kid gets the grade they earn. And retakes are not always available. They are a privilege. - especially in the corporate world. How dare you. What goes around comes around Karen. |

For all the posters referencing lazy teachers:
Teachers do most, if not all, of their grading in the evenings and over weekends. We are provided with no time at work to get this accomplished. That’s why grading takes time to get done. Is it okay? Definitely not. Grading should be done quickly so students can see results and make progress. But this is the natural result of a modern teacher workday; most of us work 11-12 hour days and still don’t get it all accomplished. Want real change? Help us advocate for time at work to actually DO work. |
