From mid January onwards - for the 3 magnet schools, the in-consortium comes out first and then the out of consortium. DC got the acceptance in March for the out of consortium and deadline to accept was 2nd week of April. For the criteria based, DC got the wait list letter in Jan and finally got accepted into one in end of May (probably someone declined and DC got the spot).

No, you don't in my experience. DC is in 7th grade now but accepted an out-of-consortiun spot in MSMC and was later invited for a criteria magnet. We chose MSMC and have been very happy.
