Experience shopping with friends- DD is mortified

Anonymous
DD had an embarrassing incident when she went shopping with a group of friends in Georgetown. There is a store called Brady Melville which, to my knowledge, is very popular among young adults and only sells small clothing sizes.

DD is 17 and has always been on the heavier side and is also pretty tall. Most of her friends are shorter than she is, and they are all skinnier. From what she told me, the girls were all trying on clothes in the dressing rooms at BM and while DD was trying on a shirt, the fabric ripped because it got stretched out. She said she tried to play it off, but her friends and the person working there all saw. She had to pay for it and didn't buy anything else.

I feel sick that she had to experience this. She eats whole foods and plays a varsity sport. Genetically, she is just predisposed to having some extra weight in her arms and stomach. She keeps insisting she's fine, but I know that she wouldn't have told me about the incident if she truly were.

I don't know how to make her feel better about this. I wish stores like this wouldn't exist.

That store is awful. I’m surprised your dd and her friends went there bc it seems to appeal to a younger/tween crowd. My 12 year old likes it bc it fits her well but even my 14 &15 year olds think it’s a dumb concept and the items are cut more for 13/13 year olds.

I would go back to the store and demand a refund. I can’t believe they made her pay for it.

I also can't believe she had to pay for it. It sucks for stores, but products damaged in the store are generally just written off. If you drop a jar of pickles at Giant, they bring out a mop but don't give you a bill.

That's ridiculous that they made her pay for it. I worked retail all through college and anytime a piece of clothing got damaged (ripped, makeup stains, whatever) we just damaged it out and took it off the sales floor.

I would definitely go back and speak to a manager about a refund.

It sounds like you have a healthy attitude about weight, health, appearance. Just keep doing what you have been doing. She told you, you talked, she said she's ok. Unless you see evidence to the contrary, let her be ok.

And I know as a mom you are upset she went through that, I would be too. Hugs.

I would have paid for that shirt out of my own paycheck before I even suggested she pay for that, AND I would have made a point to find something for her that she could wear and feel good in. You should contact the management and HQ. I'm so sorry this happened to your daughter. Ilona Maher probably can't wear anything in BM either, and she is beautiful. BM is exactly what that store should be called.

The store is awful and I judge kids who are allowed to shop there

That won’t help her DD feel better, which is why the OP posted.

That eating disorder store is still in business?!

Jeez, why would you post all the details here

Not trying to defend BM, but I doubt they “made” her pay. The kid was probably embarrassed and just paid for it quickly with as little discussion as possible. That store is toxic and I can’t believe it’s so popular. My DD is obsessed and I’ll admit the clothes are cute but she’s a tiny 13 year old and won’t think it’s so fun in a year or 2 when nothing fits
