What is your kid doing?

It’s the first I heard of it.

This is not for all schools. Each school does it differently.

My senior attends Churchill and announced this yesterday. And says they’re not going. Glad you posted. They need to go to school but won’t. When I was in HS 100 years ago I skipped —my parents never knew—bc we all got dressed and went to Kings Dominion for the day. It was fun. Mine is lying in bed. I will have them do college stuff later.

I am surprised to hear about a skip day in first semester. Is that common? In my experience they are usually in the spring when the weather is nice and college apps are all in.

I agree. I just told mine that they only get one senior skip day. If they use today this is it.

It’s not universal across the county.

It's by school, OP, and a lot of seniors don't follow the herd. Skip day is usually in the second semester, when everyone knows where they're going to college. That's the entire point of Skip Day! Otherwise it would be hard to enjoy with college apps still due...

Last year my daughter tried to tell me of at least 4 days that were all senior skip days…

This! I think your kid is pulling one over on you.

During my kids senior year, they had senior skip day usually once every marking period. Although their principal sometimes had made e-mails to announce that skip day was not county-wide and they recommended that their children would still have to attend school if they had to make up missing work for assingments.

Pretty sure my DC did not have one at Whitman, but perhaps I didn't know about it! It's kind of hard not to know since hordes of Whitman kids running around Bethesda would be pretty obvious. So not sure it's a thing everywhere.

I went to a Big 3 and we did a skip day back in the day. It was honestly kind of lame.

When I was in school senior skip day was your graduation year subtracted from the last day of school for seniors. For example let's say May 30 is the last day for seniors. Then senior skip day would be May 5. (30-25) I don't know that the formula is used today since the testing carnival usually begins May 1.

FYI-There's nothing official about senior skip day. Neither of my kids participated and it's not an excused absence so teachers don't have to let kids make-up any work unless they have a note (i.e., sick, doctor appointment etc.,)
